Towards an understanding of oleate hydratases and their application in industrial processes

Sophia Prem et al.

Summary: Fatty acid hydratases, unique to microorganisms, oxidize unsaturated C-C bonds for the detoxification of environmental toxins. Oleate hydratases (Ohys) have recently gained industrial interest due to their ability to hydroxylate oleic acid to produce 10-(R)-hydroxy stearic acid (10-HSA), which can be used as a replacement for the energy-consuming synthesis of 12-(R)-hydroxy stearic acid (12-HSA). Despite limited knowledge of substrate binding and reaction mechanisms, sustainable biotransformation of Ohys holds significant industrial potential.

Identifying carbohydrate-active enzymes of Cutaneotrichosporon oleaginosus using systems biology

Tobias Fuchs et al.

Summary: This study systematically analyzed the carbohydrate intake and utilization of the oleaginous yeast Cutaneotrichosporon oleaginosus, identifying differences in cellular growth and morphology based on the selected carbon source. Comprehensive proteomic analysis highlighted variations in secreted proteins when grown on different disaccharides, providing insights into carbo-hydrolases and potential signal peptides in this yeast species. These findings could facilitate the discovery of new substrate sources and more efficient carbon utilization for microbial lipid production.

Oleaginous yeasts- substrate preference and lipid productivity: a view on the performance of microbial lipid producers

Pariya Shaigani et al.

Summary: Among the yeast strains, C. oleaginosus showed the highest versatility in substrate utilization, productivity, and tolerance in complex media. Different fatty acid profiles obtained on each substrate suggest the possibility of manipulating culture conditions to achieve desired fatty acid composition. Corn steep liquor has potential for enhancing growth in oleaginous strains with available carbon substrate.

Functional characterization and overexpression of Δ12-desaturase in the oleaginous yeast Rhodotorula toruloides for production of linoleic acid-rich lipids

Chih-Chan Wu et al.

Summary: The overexpression of RtFAD2 in oleaginous yeast Rhodotorula toruloides significantly increased the production of linoleic acid (LA), indicating a potential application in the production of LA or polyunsaturated fatty acids. This finding may assist in the rational design of metabolic engineering related to LA production in R. toruloides.
