Effect of carbide precipitation behavior at high temperatures on microstructure and mechanical properties of M50 steel

X. F. Yu et al.

Summary: The effect of carbide precipitation behavior at high temperatures on the microstructure and mechanical properties of M50 steel was studied. It was found that short-term heat holding at high temperatures promotes carbide precipitation along grain boundaries, resulting in more obvious grain boundary characteristics. The stability and content of retained austenite were increased by short-term heat holding, but reduced after tempering. The precipitation of grain boundary carbides reduced the impact toughness, plasticity, and rotational bending fatigue properties of the steel, while slightly reducing its hardness and strength.

Influence of layer thickness on tensile deformation and fracture in the ferrite plus martensite fine multi-layered steel sheets

Norimitsu Koga et al.

Summary: The distribution of strain and void formation in fine multi-layered steel sheets subjected to tensile deformation was investigated. The influence of layer thickness on deformation and fracture behavior was discussed. Void coalescence at highly strained martensite layer and secondary voids or quasi-cleavage fracture in the ferrite layer contributed to the fracture of the multi-layered steel sheets.

Effect of pre-existing martensite within the microstructure of nano bainitic steel on its mechanical properties

Behzad Avishan et al.

Summary: Partial quenching below the martensite start temperature accelerates bainite transformation in nanostructured bainitic steels, affecting the strength-ductility combinations. The study found that pre-existing martensite changed the amount of high carbon retained austenite, increasing carbon content in solid solution and dislocation density in austenite. Microstructural changes resulted in strength promotion, reduction of elongation and impact energy, while still maintaining an acceptable balance of strength-elongation-impact energy.

Effect of precipitates on the cryogenic fracture toughness of 9%Ni steel flux cored arc weld

Weidong Mu et al.

Summary: The fracture toughness of 9%Ni steel flux cored arc welds decreases with an increasing amount of precipitates, impacting the micro-regional force and deformation. Both carbides and Laves phase have influences on the stress concentration and local plastic deformation, with Laves phase showing a higher impact. The size of carbide has minimal effect on microcrack formation near precipitates at interdendritic region during stretching at cryogenic temperature.
