Computational Evaluation of Flow-Induced Abrasion of Blade and Ladle in Kanbara Reactors for Hot Metal Desulfurization

Qiang Li et al.

Summary: This study quantitatively assessed the erosion of impeller blades in Kanbara reactors for hot metal desulfurization using a numerical model coupled with an erosion formula. Nonuniform local erosive wear was identified, with high erosion zones concentrated at the lower part of the blade and two rings of the ladle lining. The immersion depth of the impeller negligibly influenced blade abrasion but significantly affected the ladle sidewall and bottom. Quantitative correlations of abrasion rate with blade dimensions and rotation speed were obtained.

Tracking and analysis of interfaces and flow structures in multiphase flows

A. Bussmann et al.

Summary: A methodology is introduced to study the dynamics of fluid interfaces in multiphase flows, with a focus on their break-up and coalescence. The algorithm tracks surfaces by isocontouring an interface and uses physical and geometric information to find correspondences in higher-dimensional space. Filters are applied to the correspondences and events to ensure physical realizability and consider temporal and geometric constraints. The resulting events are used to map the time evolution of the fluid interfaces into a graph, providing information on their dynamics.

On the turbulence modelling of bubble plumes

Qingqing Pan et al.

Summary: Proper turbulence modeling is crucial for accurate simulation of bubble plumes, with an enhanced turbulence model developed to address the deficiencies of the widely used k-epsilon model. The enhanced turbulence model allows for improved representation of the physics of bubble plumes and transport phenomena near the free surface.

Favre-filtered LES-VOF of two-phase flows with eddy viscosity-based subgrid closure models: An a-posteriori analysis

Mahdi Saeedipour et al.

Summary: Developing functional closure models for subgrid scale (SGS) physics in large eddy simulation (LES) of turbulent two-phase flows is challenging due to complicated turbulence-interface interactions. A new approach incorporating surface tension into subgrid eddy viscosity has shown promise for accurate simulation of interfacial turbulence. Implementing this approach in an a-posteriori manner has demonstrated improved performance in predicting local turbulence characteristics and energy spectra, particularly in flows with density contrasts.

Effects of Impeller Rotational Speed and Immersion Depth on Flow Pattern, Mixing and Interface Characteristics for Kanbara Reactors Using VOF-SMM Simulations

Qiang Li et al.

Summary: The study found that the immersion depth (IID) and rotation speed (IRS) of the Kanbara Reactor have different effects on the flow pattern. Increasing IRS significantly increases the mean velocity, while increasing IID causes the discharge flow location to move downward. IRS improvements strengthen recirculation, shorten mixing time, and improve bath hydrodynamics, while IID has a limited impact on these features.

Interface-Resolved Simulation of Bubbles-Metal-Slag Multiphase System in a Gas-Stirred Ladle

Qiang Li et al.

Summary: A grid-filtered scale interface-resolved volume of fluid (VoF) model coupled with a sub-grid scale large eddy simulation (LES) was used to directly simulate bubble behavior and the evolution of multiphase interfaces and free surfaces in a bubble-metal-slag multiphase system. The study found that bubble detachment frequency and rise characteristics directly affect the size, position, and variation of the slag eye in the system.

Toward Multiscale Model Development for Multiphase Flow: Direct Numerical Simulation of Dispersed Phases and Multiscale Interfaces in a Gas-Stirred Ladle

Qiang Li et al.

Summary: Studying dispersed phases and multiscale interfaces in a gas-stirred ladle is important for multiphase systems of metallurgical reactors. A direct numerical simulation method was developed to study bubble formation, interaction with surrounding fluid, vortex structure evolution, and large-scale interface profile. Results from the simulations can help advance new closure relations for average or large-scale flows towards a multiscale model.

Computational Investigation on Effect of Impeller Dimension on Fluid Flow and Interface Behavior for Kanbara Reactor Hot Metal Treatment

Qiang Li et al.

Summary: A 3D VOF model coupled with the sliding mesh technique was developed to study the performance of five impellers with different dimensions in the Kanbara Reactor. The study revealed that increasing the aspect ratio of the impeller affects fluid flow characteristics and mixing time, with Impeller III identified as the optimal configuration in the current research.

Computational Investigation of Inclusion Removal in the Steel-Refining Ladle Process

Xipeng Guo et al.

Summary: In this study, 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling was used to analyze transient multiphase flow and inclusion removal in a gas-stirred ladle. The effects of gas stirring with bubble-inclusion interaction were analyzed using the Euler-Euler approach for multiphase flow modeling, while the effects of inclusions aggregation and removal were modeled via a population balance model (PBM).
