Effects of sleep manipulation on markers of insulin sensitivity: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

Nina Sondrup et al.

Summary: Poor sleep habits are associated with increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. This review and meta-analysis found that sleep manipulation, such as sleep restriction and circadian misalignment, can reduce insulin sensitivity and increase the risk of type 2 diabetes. However, rapid eye movement sleep disturbance and sleep fragmentation have no effect on insulin sensitivity.

Weekend catch-up sleep is associated with reduced metabolic derangements in Korean adults

Jin Joo Kim et al.

Summary: Short weekday sleep and insufficient weekend catch-up sleep are independently associated with an increased risk for metabolic derangements, except hypertension. Individuals who do not make up sleep on the weekend are more likely to be obese and have type 2 diabetes or hypercholesterolemia.

Effects of sleep deprivation on endothelial function in adult humans: a systematic review

Brady J. Holmer et al.

Summary: Sleep deprivation is associated with increased cardiovascular disease (CVD) morbidity and mortality, with age-related alterations potentially exacerbating CVD susceptibility in older individuals. Endothelial dysfunction may play a central role in linking sleep deprivation to CVD, although the exact mechanisms are not fully understood.

Association between female reproductive factors and gout: a nationwide population-based cohort study of 1 million postmenopausal women

Yeonghee Eun et al.

Summary: Shorter exposure to endogenous estrogen was associated with a high risk of gout. Conversely, exposure to exogenous estrogen such as OC and HRT was associated with an increased risk of gout. There was no significant association between reproductive factors and gout in the high BMI group, nor were the effects of OC and HRT significant in the CKD group.
