Supervisors of International Occupational Therapy Students on Clinical Placement: Perceived Tensions and Hidden Expectations

Summary: This study explores supervisors' perceptions of working with international occupational therapy students in Sweden. The findings suggest that supervisors need to balance students' expectations and learning opportunities, understand differences in resources and legislation, acknowledge students' different perceptions of dialogue and reflection, and be aware of the impact of socio-cultural situations on students' learning.

Mentoring Relationships and Gender Inequities in Academic Medicine: Findings From a Multi-Institutional Qualitative Study

Summary: This study found that mentoring relationships may be a context in which gender inequities are acknowledged and mitigated. It also pointed out that mentoring relationships may be a context in which gender inequities, such as sexual harassment, occur. While mentoring relationships have the potential to identify and mitigate gender inequities, this study suggests that this potential remains largely unrealized.

Moving forward requires clear definitions of wellness, methodologies incorporating direct interaction with participants, and a shift away from disease-model approaches. Wellness should be reimagined as healthy and authentic engagement with the inevitable challenges of a medical career to support the development of coping mechanisms and resilience.

Summary: Through social network research methods, it was found that medical students' social support networks are diverse, dynamic, and deliberate as they transition from pre-clinical to clinical training. Participants created and maintained relationships with those who provided emotional or instrumental support, while dissolving relationships that did not offer these functions.

International allied health student placements: A meta-synthesis

Summary: Through synthesizing the learning outcomes described by allied health students who have undertaken international placements, it is found that international placements lead to intertwined personal and professional development, confidence and independence, insights into different cultures, among other impacts. International placements provide students with unique learning opportunities, resulting in significant personal and professional transformational development that cannot be replicated by local placements.

Initiation of student participation in practice: An audio diary study of international clinical placements

Summary: This study found that healthcare students overcome differences in professional practice during initiation of international placements by negotiating practice between them, local professionals, and peers. A continuous dialogue between students and healthcare professionals can support initiation of student participation, help align expectations, and increase understanding of professional and educational practices, ultimately leading to meaningful contribution to practice and patient care.
