Classification and unified phenomenological modeling of complex uniaxial rate-independent hysteretic responses

Nicola Vaiana et al.

Summary: The study aims to propose a unified approach to modeling rate-independent hysteretic behavior. A detailed classification of complex hysteresis loops is performed, and a novel hysteretic model with closed form expressions for evaluating the output variable is formulated. The model offers computational efficiency and ease of implementation, and allows for an uncoupled modeling of the generic loading and unloading phases.

A procedure to model and design elastomeric-based isolation systems for the seismic protection of rocking art objects

Davide Pellecchia et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the rocking behavior of rigid bodies seismically protected by lead rubber bearings and high damping rubber bearings. A phenomenological model is developed for design procedures, allowing for evaluation of overturning spectra and nonlinear time history analyses to examine the impact of isolation devices on the rigid bodies' behavior.

Preliminary Investigation of Aging Effects on Recycled Rubber Fiber Reinforced Bearings (RR-FRBs)

D. Losanno et al.

Summary: The paper focuses on an innovative Fiber-Reinforced Bearing (FRB) developed using recycled rubber (RR-FRBs) and glass fabric reinforcement, which have better dissipation capacity, low weight, and reduced cost compared to conventional Laminated Rubber Bearings (LRBs). Accelerated aging tests were conducted to understand the effect of aging on RR-FRBs and their long-term performance, with results compared to Neoprene (N-FRBs) and conventional LRBs.

Experimental testing of full-scale fiber reinforced elastomeric isolators (FREIs) in unbounded configuration

D. Losanno et al.

Summary: This study investigated the performance of fiber reinforced elastomeric isolators and found them to be more effective in certain aspects compared to traditional steel reinforced elastomeric isolators, with higher damping capacity. The study also revealed the mechanical behavior of FREIs under different loading conditions and significant rollover phenomenon under lateral loading.

Nonlinear vibration absorbers for ropeway roller batteries control

Biagio Carboni et al.

Summary: This study investigates a nonlinear passive control strategy to reduce peak accelerations in ropeway roller battery systems by deploying an array of nonlinearly visco-elastic vibration absorbers, comparing their effectiveness with linearly visco-elastic absorbers. The nonlinearly visco-elastic absorbers show higher performance in mitigating acceleration peaks induced by vehicle transit compared to the linear absorbers.

A generalized class of uniaxial rate-independent models for simulating asymmetric mechanical hysteresis phenomena

Nicole Vaiana et al.

Summary: This article extends a class of rate-independent models to simulate complex asymmetric mechanical hysteresis phenomena. The novel formulation allows for evaluation of generalized force by solving a scalar equation and using only one history variable, demonstrated through specific instances such as the Asymmetric Bilinear and Exponential Models. The potential accuracy and computational efficiency of these models are illustrated using the Asymmetric Exponential Model.

Nonlinear Dynamic Analysis of Seismically Base-Isolated Structures by a Novel OpenSees Hysteretic Material Model

Nicolo Vaiana et al.

Summary: The novel OpenSees material model for elastomeric isolation bearings offers advantages such as parameter simplification, high accuracy, and not requiring numerical methods. By conducting numerical tests, we demonstrate its effectiveness in calculating the dynamic response of seismically base-isolated structures with elastomeric bearings.

A novel family of multiple springs models suitable for biaxial rate-independent hysteretic behavior

Nicolo Vaiana et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a novel family of multiple springs models capable of reproducing the nonlinear response typical of mechanical systems and materials with biaxial kinematic rate-independent hysteretic behavior. The derived isotropic biaxial hysteretic models, the Multiple Springs Bilinear Model and the Multiple Springs Exponential Model, demonstrate the potential accuracy and computational efficiency of the family. The sophisticated model is validated through numerical and experimental tests, showing the possibility of developing models that can reproduce different types of biaxial hysteretic behavior with few parameters having a clear mechanical significance.

Pathfollowing of high-dimensional hysteretic systems under periodic forcing

Giovanni Formica et al.

Summary: The dynamic response and bifurcations of high-dimensional systems with hysteretic restoring forces in all degrees of freedom are investigated using two hysteresis models. A numerical technique based on an enhanced pathfollowing approach using the Poincare map is employed. A five-dof system with Bouc-Wen or exponential hysteresis models enriched by nonlinear elastic terms is studied, revealing a rich variety of nonlinear responses and bifurcations.

Dynamic characterization of a system with degradation: A masonry wall

Summary: A single frequency response curve is sufficient for linear systems, but nonlinear systems require multiple curves to account for the dependency on oscillation amplitude. Damage has a significant impact on the dynamic signature of systems, especially those with degrading mechanical properties.
