Refractive Index Sensor Based on a Metal-Insulator-Metal Bus Waveguide Coupled with a U-Shaped Ring Resonator

Xiaoyu Zhang et al.

Summary: A novel refractive index sensor structure, comprising a metal-insulator-metal waveguide, two rectangular baffles, and a U-Shaped Ring Resonator, was designed and investigated using the finite element method. The simulation results demonstrated the existence of sharp asymmetric resonance, known as Fano resonance, generated by the interaction between discrete narrow-band mode and successive wide-band mode. Additionally, the formation of broadband and narrowband was further studied to identify key factors that affect the sensor's performance. The refractive-index sensor exhibited a best sensitivity of 2020 nm/RIU and a figure of merit of 53.16, suggesting its potential in nanophotonic sensing applications.

Resonance and sensing characteristics of horn-shaped cavity-coupled MIM waveguide

Fengying Yang

Summary: This paper investigates the resonance coupling between optical microcavities and waveguides by designing a horn-shaped cavity structure on the side of a metal-dielectric-metal waveguide. The coupling is simulated using the finite-difference time-domain method and the coupled mode theory. The study reveals that cavity and local modes appear in the horn-shaped cavity. The influence of geometric parameters on the transmission spectrum is analyzed, and the structure demonstrates a refractive index sensitivity of 1750 nm/RIU and a temperature sensitivity of 2.455 nm/°C. Furthermore, the sensitivity of wavelength shift and transmittance to particle size and refractive index is examined, leading to the design of a nanoparticle sensor. The proposed horn-shaped resonator structure offers a high-performance cavity choice for micro-nano sensor devices.

Shiva Khani et al.

Summary: In this paper, an all-optical plasmonic modulator with a tunable data wavelength is designed. By using separate waveguide paths for data and control signals, interference between the signals is prevented. According to simulation results, the maximum transmittance of the data wavelength can be modulated from 8.1% to 50.2% by applying both data and control signals simultaneously. The designed structure has separate and isolated paths, a relatively small footprint, and a symmetrical structure, making it suitable for complex integrated optical circuits.
