Experimental investigations of the human oesophagus: anisotropic properties of the embalmed muscular layer under large deformation

Ciara Durcan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the layer-specific material properties of the human oesophagus through ex vivo experimentation, revealing its nonlinear and anisotropic behavior with time- and history-dependent stress-softening. The longitudinal direction was stiffer than the circumferential direction, and an increase in strain rate resulted in increased stiffness in both directions. Histological analysis was carried out, and the behavior of the muscularis propria was simulated based on the experimental findings.

The shape - morphing performance of magnetoactive soft materials

Anil K. Bastola et al.

Summary: Magnetoactive soft materials (MSMs) are emerging as a promising class of smart materials with applications in artificial muscles, soft robotics, drug delivery, surgery, and metamaterials. They offer advantages such as remote actuation, high strain and strain rate, self-sensing, and fast response, making them ideal for shape morphing, dynamic locomotion, and reconfigurable structures. This review article provides a comprehensive overview of MSMs and discusses future perspectives for developing multifunctional magnetoactive devices.
