Surface roughness prediction of wire electric discharge machining (WEDM)-machined AZ91D magnesium alloy using multilayer perceptron, ensemble neural network, and evolving product-unit neural network

Turan Gurgenc et al.

Summary: Magnesium alloy parts are highly valued in industries for their lightweight and high specific strengths. Conventional manufacturing methods face difficulties in producing Mg alloys, but nontraditional methods like wire electric discharge machining (WEDM) can solve these problems. Predicting surface roughness (SR) using artificial intelligence methods eliminates the difficulties and provides advantages in terms of time, material, and cost. This study used different parameters to cut AZ91D using WEDM and compared different methods for predicting SR, with EPUNN demonstrating better performance.

Influence of sodium pentaborate (B5H10NaO13) additive in plasma electrolytic oxidation process on WE43 magnesium alloys

Taha Cagri Senocak et al.

Summary: In recent years, research has focused on the effects of adding various nanoparticles and chemicals dissolved in electrolytes to chemicals. This paper proposes the idea of using sodium pentaborate in the electrolyte PEO coating on the WE43 magnesium alloy and investigates its tribological and corrosion properties. The results show that the sodium pentaborate additive supports the formation of hard oxide compounds, providing corrosion protection and reducing wear rate in comparison to non-additive PEO coatings. The experimental results suggest that sodium pentaborate can be used as an electrolyte additive for advanced functional coating materials in tribological applications.

Microstructure, mechanical properties and fracture behavior of a new WE43 alloy

Gui-Long Jia et al.

Summary: The microstructures, mechanical properties and fracture behaviors of a new WE43 alloy were investigated. The optimal solution treatment and aging treatment resulted in a large amount of beta '-phases dispersed and precipitated at the grain interior, providing good comprehensive mechanical properties of the alloy. Further studies on the fracture behaviors in different states show significant differences in comparison with traditional WE43 and other modified WE43 alloys.
