Corrosion, Corrosion Fatigue, and Protection of Magnesium Alloys: Mechanisms, Measurements, and Mitigation

Temitope Olumide Olugbade et al.

Summary: Magnesium (Mg) alloys are non-toxic, biodegradable, and biocompatible special metallic biomaterials with less corrosion-resistant in physiological and chloride-containing environments. Approaches like surface modifications and coatings, as well as pretreatments such as anodization, microarc oxidation, and electrodeposition can enhance their corrosion resistance.

Corrosion behavior of Mg-Zn-Zr-RE alloys under physiological environment - Impact on mechanical integrity and biocompatibility

Marwa AbdelGawad et al.

Summary: The effects of RE additions on the biodegradability of Mg-Zn alloys were studied, and it was found that the size and distribution of precipitates played a significant role in corrosion response. The EZ33 alloy exhibited better corrosion resistance and biocompatibility, while the ZE41 alloy showed more severe degradation and reduced mechanical properties.

Role of trace additions of Mn and Y in improving the corrosion resistance of Mg-3Al-1Zn alloy

Soo-Min Baek et al.

Summary: The corrosion resistance of conventional and experimental Mg-3Al-1Zn-based alloys with different Mn and Y content was compared. The experimental Mg-3Al-1Zn-0.05Mn-0.03Y alloy exhibited a corrosion rate of 0.91 mm y(-1), about four times slower than that of a conventional Mg-3Al-1Zn-0.3Mn alloy, highlighting the importance of trace additions of Mn and Y in improving corrosion resistance.

Investigation on the corrosion resistance of the Mg-10Al-xMn alloys based on thermodynamic calculations

Xiaojing Li et al.

Summary: The corrosion resistance of alloys is influenced by both the Gibbs energies and the content of second phases, with a lower Mn content corresponding to a more positive Gibbs energy and better corrosion resistance. Alloy 2# exhibited the best corrosion resistance among the five alloys studied.
