Microstructural stability and paint bake response of pre-aged AA7075

Z. Ma et al.

Summary: High strength AA7xxx alloys with long ageing times are used in the automotive industry to provide significant strength/weight benefits. Pre-ageing has been investigated as a method to reduce total ageing time by combining it with the paint bake cycle. This study presents the first results on the precipitate evolution during pre-ageing, natural ageing and paint bake of AA7075 using SAXS, TEM and isothermal calorimetry techniques. It demonstrates that a stable microstructure can be achieved through pre-ageing at 80 degrees C for 8 hours, and a high T6 hardness can be obtained through a short paint bake process with uniformly distributed precipitates.

Interactions between plastic deformation and precipitation in Aluminium alloys: A crystal plasticity model

Madeleine Bignon et al.

Summary: This study presents a crystal plasticity model that accounts for the dynamic precipitation process in aluminium alloys. The model considers the influence of evolving precipitate distribution on dislocation glide and the accelerated precipitation kinetics caused by deformation. It integrates the effect of precipitates on deformation behavior into the crystal plasticity constitutive law. The spatio-temporal modeling of deformation's influence on precipitation kinetics is achieved using a multi-class precipitation kinetic model. The model's application to the growth and coarsening of shearable precipitates in pre-aged AA7075 alloy under deformation at 150 degrees C reveals significant improvements in uniform elongation and tensile stress.

Comparisons of Age Hardening and Precipitation Behavior in 7075 Alloy Under Single and Double-Stage Aging Treatments

Yun Fan et al.

Summary: Various heat treatments were conducted on 7075 alloy in this study to reduce treatment time while achieving similar mechanical properties as the traditional T6 tempered alloy. Hardness tests showed that the double aging treatment and single aging treatment had high similarity in precipitates, mainly consisting of Cr-containing large dispersoids and fine precipitates. Advanced microscopy techniques were used to compare the two treatments.

Summary: The research revealed that the formation and evolution of GPI and GPII zones during natural aging had a significant impact on the mechanical properties of the Al-7.6Zn-2.7Mg-2.0Cu-0.1Zr-0.07Ti alloy. The Zn/Mg atomic ratio, mean radius, number density, and volume fraction of the GP zones also played crucial roles in influencing the mechanical properties of the alloy.
