Achieving highest Young's modulus in Al-Li by tracing the size and bonding evolution of Li-rich precipitates

Chengpeng Xue et al.

Summary: It has long been recognized that the addition of 1 wt.% Li to Al can decrease the density of Al alloy by 3% and increase its Young's modulus by 6%. However, the fundamental mechanism behind the modulus improvements is still a subject of controversy. In this study, nano-sized Li-rich clusters were experimentally produced using non-equilibrium solidification and their evolution during subsequent heat treatments was traced. The results revealed changes in lattice constants and Young's modulus, indicating the dominant role of bond strength and size of Li-rich regions.

Natural aging behaviors of Al-Cu-Li alloy: PLC effect, properties and microstructure evolution

C. H. Wu et al.

Summary: This study deepy explored the natural aging behaviors and underlying mechanism of the 2195 Al-Cu-Li alloy. Results indicate that the alloy exhibits a strong response in the early stage of natural aging, with the tensile strength rapidly increasing after 4 hours and reaching a plateau after 24 hours. The contribution of solute atoms, delta'/beta' precipitates, and GP zones to strength in the natural aging state is similar, at around 161 MPa, 80 MPa, and 141 MPa, respectively.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of titanium on cast Al-Li-Cu alloys and found that titanium addition can significantly refine the grains and improve the age-hardening and mechanical properties of the alloy. Additionally, the interaction between titanium and zirconium in the alloy also affects the formation and coarsening rate of precipitates.

Genetic structural phase evolution from Li-containing S-like phase precipitates towards S-phase in AlCuLiMg alloys

S. Y. Li et al.

Summary: The S-phase is an effective strengthening precipitate in aluminum alloys for aerospace applications. Previous studies have well revealed its precipitation mechanism in AlCuMg alloys. However, this study reports a different scenario of S-phase formation in an AlCuLiMg alloy. By using atomic-resolution imaging in transmission electron microscopy, it is discovered that this alloy can form a precipitate microstructure dominated by Li-containing Guinier-Preston-Bagaryatsky zones and previously unknown S-like phase precipitates. The formation of the S-like precipitate undergoes a structural phase evolution rather than a conventional phase transformation. This study shows that AlCuLiMg alloys can develop a distinct microstructure with S-like/S-phase and T-1-phase precipitates, without the commonly observed delta'/theta'/delta' composite precipitates.

Coarsening of skeletal microstructures: Re-examination of data on Pseudo-Skeletal γ′ precipitate coarsening in binary Ni-Al Alloys

Alan J. Ardell

Summary: This study re-examines the kinetics of γ' precipitates in binary Ni-Al alloys. It was found that a previous investigation had made an unfortunate error in unit conversion, rendering all conclusions unreliable. The re-analysis shows that the equations describing skeletal coarsening kinetics are not trustworthy in providing useful quantitative information on the coarsening of non-skeletal microstructures and the elastic energy of γ' precipitates with misfit.

Yang Wang et al.

Summary: Core-shell nanoparticles in Al-Li alloy were formed through double-aging treatment, controlling the precipitation and coarsening process at different temperatures. The coarsening was found to be controlled by interface reactions, with Orowan bypass strengthening as the operative mechanism at lower temperatures.

The effect of major constituents on microstructure and mechanical properties of cast Al-Li-Cu-Zr alloy

Liang Wu et al.

Summary: The study investigates the impact of major constituents on a cast Al-Li-Cu-Zr alloy, revealing that increasing Li content raises the melting temperature and leads to the formation of various precipitates. Minor modifications to alloy composition greatly alter precipitation behavior, resulting in different precipitation characteristics in different alloys.
