Combined effect of residual and mean stresses on fatigue behavior of welded aluminum 2024 alloy

Vinay Kumar Yadav et al.

Summary: The study found that the complexity in microstructure and tensile residual stress in the weld zone significantly influenced the fatigue behavior of the welded joints. Increase in tensile residual stresses led to an apparent increase in mean stresses, reducing fatigue lives. Re-appearance of hardening precipitates after heat-treatment improved fatigue lives in the welded joints.

The role of pin eccentricity in friction stir welding of Al-Mg-Si alloy sheets: microstructural evolution and mechanical properties

Wentao Hou et al.

Summary: The study introduced eccentric motion by offsetting the pin from the tool shoulder in order to enhance material flow and grain refinement in the stir zone during friction stir welding of Al-Mg-Si aluminum alloy plates. The results showed that pin eccentricity had a positive effect on promoting material flow and grain refinement, as well as enhancing the toughness of the weld joint.

Crystal plasticity finite element modeling of grain size and morphology effects on yield strength and extreme value fatigue response

Aaditya Lakshmanan et al.

Summary: A computational framework is developed to incorporate grain size and morphology effects in the crystal plasticity finite element method. The framework reveals the significant influence of grain size and morphology on yield strength and extreme value fatigue response. The developed framework is important for simulations of polycrystalline microstructure models with significant grain morphology anisotropy.

Fatigue strength evaluation of 5059 aluminum alloy welded joints Considering welding deformation and residual stress

Shuangxi Xu et al.

Summary: With the transformation and upgrading of the shipbuilding industry, aluminum alloy shipbuilding is developing towards energy saving, lightweight, and environmental protection. However, the welding of aluminum alloy structures has two prominent shortcomings: large deformation and low fatigue strength. This study aims to accurately consider the influence of welding defects by designing a temperature field simulation program for thin plate welding structures to predict welding deformation and residual stress. The simulation results show good agreement with the test results for the temperature field and welding deformation of typical welded joints. Furthermore, the fatigue strength classification curves of 5059 aluminum alloy welded joints are updated based on the hot spot stress using welding deformation and residual stress as initial conditions.

Mechanism of microstructure evolution and grain growth in friction stir welding of AA6061-T6 and AISI304 in air and water media

Raju Prasad Mahto et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effect of grain size on the tensile strength and ductility of friction stir welded joints. It found that FSW in water medium yields finer microstructure than in air medium, with particle stimulated nucleation and strain induced boundary migration observed as recrystallization mechanisms. Additionally, higher grain growth was observed for FSW in air medium, with different textured grains produced at the stir zone in water and air mediums.

The Portevin-Le Chatelier (PLC) effect in an Al-Cu aluminum alloy fabricated by selective laser melting

Zhiheng Hu et al.

Summary: An Al-Cu alloy fabricated by selective laser melting was chosen to study the Portevin-Le Chatelier (PLC) effects. The study revealed that heat treatment decreases dislocation density and the decrease in solute atom concentration and dislocation density are responsible for the attenuation of PLC effects. The strong anisotropy in PLC effects observed in the as-built samples is attributed to grain structure and texture.
