A nanostructured Ag/Cu multilayered composite exhibiting high hardness and high electrical conductivity prepared by a novel multicomponent accumulative roll bonding

Hao Dong et al.

Summary: A novel multicomponent accumulative roll bonding (MARB) approach was proposed and successfully applied to prepare a nanostructured Ag/Cu multilayered composite. The MARB approach effectively suppresses shear band formation and reduces the thickness of the composite to 40 nm in only 6 cycles. The as-prepared nanostructured Ag/Cu multilayered composite exhibits high hardness (2.24 GPa) and high electrical conductivity (84% of international annealed copper standard; IACS), attributed to atomically ordered and chemically sharp hetero-phase interfaces and low density of grain boundaries resulting from the MARB process.

Phase reversion-induced heterogeneous structure in a ferrous medium-entropy alloy via cryorolling and annealing

Shilei Liu et al.

Summary: A processing route involving cryorolling and annealing was used to achieve heterogeneous grain structures in a Cr15Fe55Mn20Ni10 ferrous medium-entropy alloy. Through phase reversion and partial recrystallization, cryorolled sheets exhibited a heterogeneous microstructure with multi-scale grains, resulting in higher yield strength and fracture elongation compared to room-temperature rolled sheets. The improved mechanical properties were attributed to grain boundary hardening, hetero-deformation-induced hardening, and dislocation hardening.

Microstructure and mechanical properties of AA1050/AA6061 multilayer composites via accumulative roll bonding and cryorolling and subsequent aging

Lingling Song et al.

Summary: AA1050/AA6061 multilayer composites were processed using a combination of accumulative roll bonding (ARB) and cryorolling, followed by aging treatment. The study analyzed the evolution of microstructure and mechanical properties of the composites. The results revealed that cryorolling improves the mechanical properties by enhancing interfacial flatness, delaying plastic instability, accumulating higher dislocation density, achieving grain refinement, reducing delamination, and promoting bonding interface quality. Cryorolled samples exhibited significantly higher ultimate tensile strength compared to ARBed samples after peak aging. Both ARBed and ARB + cryorolled samples showed optimal performance after aging at 100 degrees C. The increase in ultimate tensile strength in AA1050/AA6061 multilayer composites at peak aging is mainly due to the presence of ultrafine grains and fine precipitates in the AA6061 layer.

Multiple gradient structures driving higher tensile strength and good capacity to absorb e d energy in aluminum wire processed by cryogenic pre-torsion

S. L. Cai et al.

Summary: Aluminum wire with multiple gradient structures (MGSs) was processed by cryogenic pre-torsion, resulting in the formation of grain size, dislocation density, precipitate size, and precipitate volume fraction gradients. The multiple gradient structured aluminum wire exhibits higher strength and enhanced energy absorption capacity. The excellent mechanical properties are attributed to fine grains, high dislocation density, and large volume fraction of precipitate.

Hetero-zone boundary affected region: A primary microstructural factor controlling extra work hardening in heterostructure

Yanfei Wang et al.

Summary: Heterostructured metals possess superior mechanical properties exceeding the prediction by the rule-of-mixtures. By incorporating a newly developed mechanism-based plasticity model, this study reveals the key role of the hetero-zone boundary affected region (Hbar) in controlling the synergistic mechanical responses of heterostructure. The accumulation of geometrically necessary dislocations in Hbar contributes to extra work hardening, and the best strength-ductility combination is achieved when Hbar approaches saturation.
