Summary: This study addresses the trade-off between strength and ductility in low-density delta-transformation-induced-plasticity steels by controlling the morphology and volume fraction of 8-ferrite. It is found that the thickness and volume fraction of 8-ferrite bands significantly influence the TRIP effect and the initiation and propagation of cracks.

Room temperature quenching and partitioning (RT-Q&P) processed steel with chemically heterogeneous initial microstructure

Guiyoung Gu et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that proactive control of microstructure heterogeneity can lead to unprecedented tensile properties in steels. The heterogeneity of Mn distribution, generated by utilizing its solubility difference between ferrite, austenite, and cementite, promotes the retention of austenite in the final microstructure, resulting in improved tensile strength and ductility.

Effect of ultra-fast heating on microstructure and mechanical properties of cold-rolled low-carbon low-alloy Q&P steels with different austenitizing temperature

Xiaodong Tan et al.

Summary: In this study, we performed ultra-fast heating quenching and partitioning processes on a cold-rolled low-carbon low-alloy steel, and analyzed the effect of different heating rates on microstructure evolution and mechanical properties. Results show that ultra-fast heating can improve the structure refinement, strength, and ductility of the sample. Additionally, the morphology of retained austenite and strain partition also have an impact on the mechanical properties of the material.

Improving mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of 0.5 wt.% C TRIP steel by adjusting retained austenite stability and microstructural constituents

X. X. Dong et al.

Summary: The effect of retained austenite stability and martensite-austenite island/fresh martensite on the mechanical properties, fracture behavior, and corrosion resistance of 0.5 wt.% C TRIP steel was studied. The results show that the morphology and volume fraction of retained austenite play a crucial role in determining the steel's comprehensive mechanical properties, while the presence of martensite-austenite island/fresh martensite and blocky retained austenite can lead to premature crack initiation and deterioration of corrosion resistance.

Improvement of the strength-ductility balance in ultrafast heated steels by combining high-temperature annealing and quenching and partitioning process

E. I. Hernandez-Duran et al.

Summary: The study on Fe-0.24C-1.4Mn-1.4Si steel revealed that Q&P steel grades exhibit enhanced mechanical behavior compared to DQ counterparts, with improved yield strength, uniform elongation, and total elongation after partitioning at 400 degrees C. While the ultimate tensile strength of Q&P steels decreased compared to DQ steels annealed at the same peak temperature, the final strength-ductility balance of Q&P steels was superior to DQ steel grades, attributed to an interplay between a sustainable TRIP effect and effective strain-stress partitioning among the microconstituents resulted after the Q&P process.

Investigation of metastable austenite in Q&P steels and medium Mn steels through deep-cryogenic treatment

Summary: Three kinds of alloys were prepared via different heat treatment conditions, and the C and Mn concentrations in metastable austenite (gamma) varied in Q&P, 6MnHR, and 9MnIA samples. The content of gamma in the three steels changed to different degrees with deep-cryogenic treatment, primarily due to the influence of C and Mn atoms on transformation temperature and Neel temperature.
