Combinatorial fluorapatite-based scaffolds substituted with strontium, magnesium and silicon ions for mending bone defects

Nasim Golafshan et al.

Summary: This study synthesized strontium modified fluorapatite (Sr-FAp) and magnesium silicon modified fluorapatite (Mg-SiFAp) bioceramics through mechanical alloying methodology. The doped elements decreased the crystallinity of FAp and enhanced osteogenic differentiation of hMSCs. In vivo studies showed that strontium ion significantly promoted bone formation in fluorapatite.

Effect of strontium substitution on structural, sinterability, physicomechanical and biological properties of akermanite ceramic

Hossein Mohammadi et al.

Summary: Incorporating strontium into akermanite ceramic enhanced its physicomechanical properties by reducing grain size and improving sinterability. The in vitro biocompatibility experiment showed that akermanite material with finer grain size and containing Sr provided better interaction with human fetal osteoblast cells compared to the unsubstituted counterpart. The controlled degradation rate and release of Sr2+ into the medium played a synergistic role in enhancing the in vitro biological properties of akermanite-based materials.
