Summary: This study employed a unique design of HTCM-DTA to investigate the solidification behavior of super austenitic stainless steel (SASS). By comparing experimental data under different conditions, four solidification modes of SASS were revealed and the factors influencing solidification behavior were analyzed, which is of great significance for adjusting the continuous casting process of high nitrogen alloys.

TiO2-Assisted Microstructural Variations in the Weld Metal of EH36 Shipbuilding Steel Subject to High Heat Input Submerged Arc Welding

Summary: Two comparable fluxes, pure CaF2 and CaF2-40 wt pct TiO2, were used to modify shipbuilding steels under high heat input submerged arc welding to investigate the unique functions of TiO2 addition. Compared with pure CaF2, TiO2-containing flux could increase the width of columnar austenite from 119.2 +/- 18.1 to 201.5 +/- 32.2 μm. Furthermore, TiO2 could significantly enhance the fraction of acicular ferrite, primarily through the formation of Ti-bearing inclusions.

In-situ characterization of silicate slag crystallization by electrical impedance spectroscopy: Construction of continuous cooling transformation diagram

Summary: In this study, different techniques were compared to investigate the crystallization behavior of silicate slags. In-situ impedance spectroscopy, a recently reported method, was used to study the solidification of slags. The electrical conductivity data obtained from this technique was related to microstructure changes during slag cooling, and continuous-cooling-transformation (CCT) diagrams were constructed. The study concludes that in-situ impedance measurement is an accurate alternative or complementary method to thermodynamic calculations, differential thermal analysis (DTA), and confocal scanning laser microscopy (CSLM) for studying slag crystallization.

Unravelling microstructure evolution induced mechanical responses in weld metals of EH420 shipbuilding steel subjected to varied high heat inputs

Summary: The microstructure evolution and mechanical responses of weld metals under various heat inputs were investigated in EH420 shipbuilding steel using scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectrometry, electron backscatter diffraction and mechanical testing. The results showed that as the heat input increased, the relative percentage of acicular ferrites decreased while the grain boundary ferrites increased. The reduced number of potent nuclei at a lower cooling rate was largely responsible for the decrease in hardness and toughness.

A Study of Microstructure and Mechanical Properties for the Autogenous Single-Pass Butt Weldment of a Ferritic/Martensitic Steel Using Gas Tungsten Arc Welding

Summary: A 12% Cr ferritic/martensitic steel HT-9 has been studied for its microstructure and mechanical properties in gas tungsten arc butt welded joints, both in as-welded and as-tempered conditions. The welding process resulted in heterogeneously distributed microhardness in the weldment, with solute C dominating the variation. Low toughness in the fusion zone and improved impact toughness after tempering treatment were observed. The presence of delta-ferrite was identified as a major factor affecting impact toughness in the fusion zone.

Heterogeneous Microstructure-Induced Mechanical Responses in Various Sub-Zones of EH420 Shipbuilding Steel Welded Joint Under High Heat Input Electro-Gas Welding

Summary: The study found that the weld metal in EH420 shipbuilding steel welded joint by electro-gas welding had higher toughness compared to the coarse-grained heat-affected zone, while the coarse austenite grains in the CGHAZ may facilitate crack propagation. Additionally, polygonal ferrites and tempered pearlites formed at the junction of the fine-grained heat-affected zone and the intercritical heat-affected zone induced a softened zone.

In Situ Observation and Growth Kinetics of Bainite Laths in the Coarse-Grained Heat-Affected Zone of 2.25Cr-1Mo Heat-Resistant Steel During Simulated Welding

Summary: The in situ Austenite -> bainite transformation in the coarse-grained heat-affected zone of 2.25Cr-1Mo steel has been documented using a confocal scanning laser microscope, and the kinetics of bainite growth has been quantified. Four typical nucleation sites of bainite laths have been identified. Moreover, the growth rate of nine distinctive bainite laths varies from 9 to 200 μm/s, depending on the degree of supercooling and nucleation sites of bainite laths.
