Evading the strength-ductility trade-off at room temperature and achieving ultrahigh plasticity at 800°C in a TiAl alloy

Guoming Zheng et al.

Summary: This study developed two new microstructures, T-T and T-D structures, in the Ti-43.5Al-4Nb-1Mo-0.18 (TNM) alloy, which significantly improved the alloy's strength and ductility. The formation of deformation twins and the promotion of dynamic recrystallization were found to play important roles in enhancing the plasticity at both room temperature and elevated temperatures.

Tuning the microstructure and mechanical properties of TiAl-based alloy through grain boundary engineering

Yaodong Xuanyuan et al.

Summary: Grain boundary character distribution (GBCD) in TiAl-based alloy was modified through multidirectional isothermal forging (MDIF) combined with annealing, resulting in enhanced room-temperature plasticity. The combination of MDIF and annealing at 1100 degrees C for 90 min promoted the formation of annealing twins and increased the fraction of low-SCSL boundaries, leading to the disruption of random boundary networks and improved plasticity in TiAl-based alloy.

Insights into the abnormal flow softening of lamellar γ-TiAl alloys during hot-working: Experimental analysis and numerical simulation

Liang Cheng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the deformation pattern and mechanical response of a Ti-43.5Al-8Nb-0.2W-0.2B alloy with refined fully lamellar microstructure. The results showed that the plastic anisotropy of the lamellar colonies led to bending deformation, slow recrystallization kinetics, and crystalline rotation. Numerical simulation demonstrated that the mechanical response of the colonies depended on the prior orientation, with continuous flow hardening observed at certain interfaces.

Kinetics of cyclically-induced mechanical twinning in γ-TiAl unveiled by a combination of acoustic emission, neutron diffraction and electron microscopy

A. Vinogradov et al.

Summary: The cyclic response and microstructure evolution of a near gamma-TiAl alloy were investigated using a combination of experimental techniques, including in-situ acoustic emission measurements, TEM, SEM, ECCI/EBSD examinations, and in-situ neutron diffraction. The study found that the cyclic mechanical behavior of the alloy can be comprehensively explained by the interplay between mechanisms such as deformation twinning, dislocation slip, and detwinning. This interplay governs the behavior of underlying mechanisms in the early stages of fatigue damage evolution and likely determines the overall fatigue response of the alloy at room temperature.

Dynamic recrystallization and hot processing map of Ti-48Al-2Cr-2Nb alloy during the hot deformation

Xiaofei Chen et al.

Summary: The study investigated the dynamic recrystallization mechanism of the Ti-48Al-2Cr-2Nb alloy during thermal uniaxial compression experiments. It was found that both discontinuous dynamic recrystallization (DDRX) and continuous dynamic recrystallization (CDRX) occurred in the gamma grains, with the crystal orientations of CDRX grains close to the (001) orientation at a strain of 0.92. The emergence of DRX in the gamma laths of lamellar colonies and the alpha 2 to gamma phase transformation were confirmed, and a new hot processing map based on DRX volume fraction was established to optimize the thermo-mechanical treatment of the TiAl alloy.

Microstructure, mechanical and tribological performances of a directionally solidified γ-TiAl alloy

Hailing Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, Ti-47Al-2Nb-2Cr-2Mn alloy directionally solidified by electromagnetic cold crucible exhibited good mechanical properties at both room temperature and high temperature. The research found that dislocation slip and twinning jointly dominated room-temperature plastic deformation, with twin boundaries acting as obstacles to dislocation slip. Additionally, TiAl samples with different orientations showed varied friction and wear characteristics.
