Microstructural characteristics and its correlation to mechanical properties of additively manufactured nickel-base superalloy upon heat treatments

Changhao Pei et al.

Summary: This study investigated the anisotropic mechanical properties of IN718 superalloy in three different heat treatment states and three loading directions. The differences in mechanical performances were attributed to precipitation hardening and the impediment of dislocation motion from delta particles. Preferential epitaxial grain growth and resulting ⟨100⟩ texture were considered responsible for the anisotropic tensile strength. Weibull distribution and area-weighted grain diameter were used to characterize the grain distributions. Hall-Petch relation was established to correlate directional grain size and yield strength, illustrating the dominance of precipitates in strengthening mechanisms and the effects of subgrain boundaries.

Effects of Squeezing Pressure and Hot Rolling on (Al3Zr/Al2O3 + ZrB2)/6016Al Nanocomposites Synthesized Under Electromagnetic Field

Soban Muddassir Dar et al.

Summary: Squeezed in situ 3-wt.% (Al3Zr/Al2O3 + ZrB2) particle-reinforced 6016Al-matrix composites were produced at 650 degrees C, resulting in a grain size of 65-70 mu m. The squeezing pressure (10-20 MPa) affected the distribution of reinforcement particles and the formation of hot spots. The composites exhibited improved mechanical properties after hot rolling, with the composite squeezed under 20 MPa showing superior ultimate tensile strength.

Summary: The present study aimed to develop aluminum metal matrix composites (AA7075) reinforced with varying proportions of Tantalum Carbide (TaC) using rheo stir casting process. The microstructural analysis showed that the addition of TaC induced grain refinement in AA7075 matrix. The mechanical properties, such as microhardness, yield strength, and ultimate tensile strength, increased with the increase in TaC addition. The rheo stir casting process resulted in enhanced densification and particle distribution of AA7075/TaC composites.

On the formation of large grain structure after friction stir processing of ultrafine-grained aluminium alloy

Mahmoud Sarkari Khorrami et al.

Summary: The tendency for the formation of large grain structure in ultrafine-grained aluminum after friction stir processing (FSP) was investigated. Microstructural assessments using electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) analysis were carried out at different regions. The results showed that the ultrafine-grained microstructure of the base metal played a crucial role in the occurrence of dynamic recrystallization (DRX) in the stir zone. Enlarged grains were found ahead of the FSP tool, which were formed through partial static recrystallization, grain growth, and strain-induced grain boundary migration. These large grains could delay grain subdivision through continuous and geometrical DRX mechanisms, and the remaining stored strain promoted grain growth in the stir zone.

Influence of energy density on polyamide 12 processed by SLS: from physical and mechanical properties to microstructural and crystallization evolution

Summary: This paper provides a detailed study on the influence of laser energy density on mechanical, surface, and dimensional properties of polyamide 12 (PA12) parts produced by selective laser sintering (SLS). Results show a high dependency of properties on laser energy density and a compromise between laser exposure parameters and desired properties. Surface roughness is associated with overlap degree at higher scan line spacing values, and higher energy density levels result in higher mechanical properties but excessively high energy density can decrease them. The transition from brittle to ductile fracture with increasing energy density is clearly observed through mechanical analysis and SEM.
