Toward energy-efficient physical vapor deposition: Routes for replacing substrate heating during magnetron sputter deposition by employing metal ion irradiation

X. Li et al.

Summary: To meet the growing demand for sustainable development, reducing energy consumption during thin film growth through magnetron sputtering is crucial. Low-temperature growth of dense, hard coatings is also necessary to protect temperature-sensitive substrates. A novel method using metal ion irradiation to facilitate adatom mobility and achieve high-quality dense films at substrate temperatures not exceeding 130 degrees C has been developed, showing promising results in terms of film properties and energy efficiency.
