High-entropy alloy inspired development of compositionally complex superhard (Hf,Ta,Ti,V,Zr)-B-N coatings

Andreas Kretschmer et al.

Summary: The phase stability and mechanical properties of multimetal-boronitride (Hf,Ta,Ti,V,Zr)-B-N were investigated using ab initio computations and experimental methods. Non-reactively sputtered (Hf,Ta,Ti,V,Zr)-B-N coatings exhibited a single-phase fcc solid solution with exceptional hardness and thermal stability. The (Hf,Ta,Ti,V,Zr)-B-N preferred the fcc NaCl-type structure up to a B:N ratio of 3.5.

Oxidation kinetics of overstoichiometric TiB2 thin films grown by DC magnetron sputtering

Samira Dorri et al.

Summary: We studied the oxidation properties of sputter-deposited TiB2.5 coatings at different temperatures. The results showed that at 600 degrees Celsius, the coating exhibited protective oxidation behavior, and the structure of the oxide layer also changed. Moreover, decreasing the heating rate had a noticeable impact on the oxidation process.

Age hardening in superhard ZrB2-rich Zr1-xTaxBy thin films

Babak Bakhit et al.

Summary: The mechanical properties of Zr1-xTaxBy thin films were studied, showing an increase in hardness during annealing with the highest achieved for Zr0.8Ta0.2B1.8. Despite a decrease in hardness due to factors like recrystallization, all films maintained hardness values above 34 GPa throughout the annealing temperature range.

Disclosing small scale length properties in core-shell structured B4C-TiB2 composites

Laura Silvestroni et al.

Summary: This study investigates the microstructural features of B4C-TiB2 composites and their evolution from powder processing to sintering. Nanoindentation was used to correlate small-scale grain structures to local properties, providing insights into mechanical behavior. The development of a core/shell structure with different compositions and variable guest cations in the boride grains was observed in dense ceramics, revealing new findings for the synthesis of high-performance materials.
