Influence of Ta on the intermediate temperature creep behavior of a single crystal superalloy

Zhicheng Ge et al.

Summary: The addition of Ta in a Ni-based single crystal superalloy has been found to significantly increase creep rupture life, affect lattice misfit, lead to the formation of stacking faults in the gamma matrix, and result in a denser dislocation network at the gamma/gamma ' interfaces. This contributes to a lower steady state creep rate and longer steady state creep life in the Ta-containing alloy.

Enhanced creep resistance induced by minor Ti additions to a second generation nickel-based single crystal superalloy

Jinbin Chen et al.

Summary: This paper proposes an alternative approach to enhance the creep resistance of nickel-based single crystal superalloys by slight composition modification instead of increasing the Re content. Experimental results show that the addition of minor Ti can increase the quantity and size of precipitates, improve lattice misfit, and enhance the partitioning behavior of the alloy. The Ti-containing alloy exhibits significantly improved creep resistance, extended creep life, and a stronger dislocation strengthening mechanism.

Ali Kalush et al.

Summary: This paper demonstrates the impact of defects inherited from the deposition processes on the lifetime of MCrAlY coatings. The oxidation behavior of two coatings, processed by different projection techniques, was investigated. Thicker coatings were found to have a higher oxidation rate and experienced chemical failure. Additionally, thicker coatings also developed mechanically induced chemical failure.

Formation process and oxidation behavior of MCrAlY plus AlSiY composite coatings on a Ni-based superalloy

S. M. Li et al.

Summary: In this study, an AlSiY coating and two MCrAlY + AlSiY composite coatings with different thickness of MCrAlY inter layer were prepared using arc ion plating (AIP) and vacuum annealing. The isothermal oxidation behavior of the coatings at 1100 degrees C for 300 h was investigated. The composite coatings showed better high-temperature oxidation resistance due to the addition of MCrAlY layer, which effectively prevented the diffusion of refractory elements to the outer layer. The inhibition of Al inward diffusion was stronger as the Si content increased in the outer layer during annealing.

Summary: The addition of titanium accelerates the oxidation rate of Ni-Cr-W alloys, promotes the formation of Cr(2)O3 scales, inhibits the generation of Ni oxide, and induces internal oxidation and nitridation. The depth of internal oxidation and nitridation increases with the increase of titanium content.

The research found that there is a range for the coarsening exponent (n) in the high volume fraction condition, and the minimum coarsening rate occurs at a Ta/W ratio of about 0.5 under long-term aging at 1000 degrees C.

Understanding of failure mechanisms of the oxide scales formed on nanocrystalline coatings with different Al content during cyclic oxidation

Shasha Yang et al.

Summary: The cyclic oxidation behaviors of three nanocrystalline coatings with different phase constitutions were studied, showing serious surface rumpling and cracking on the gamma/gamma' coating, premature degradation in microstructure of the coating on gamma/gamma' phase dissolution and concurrent grain coarsening, and local spallation of the oxide scale on the gamma'/beta coating due to its insusceptibility to rumpling. The gamma' coating outperformed its counterparts in terms of oxidation rate, resistance to scale cracking and spallation, and limited elements-interdiffusion with the underlying substrate.

A study on the mechanical and thermal shock properties of MCrAlY coating prepared by arc ion plating

Shiming Xie et al.

Summary: In this study, MCrAlY coatings with different microstructures were prepared by arc ion plating to investigate their mechanical and thermal shock properties. The results indicate that the microstructure of the coating significantly impacts its thermal shock properties. A columnar structure exhibited poor thermal shock resistance, while a dense and laminar structure was found to be ideal. Increasing bias voltage during coating preparation can achieve the desired structure but may reduce oxidation resistance.
