Exploring wettability difference-driven wetting by utilizing electrospun chimeric Janus microfiber comprising cellulose acetate and polyvinylpyrrolidone

Menglong Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the difference in wettability and drug release of fibers with different structures. Three types of fibers, uniaxial, Janus and chimeric Janus, were fabricated by electrospinning. Various characterization techniques were used to examine the morphology, inner structures, physical states, and compatibilities of the fibers. WCA tests and in vitro drug release experiments were conducted to evaluate the wettability and drug release behavior of the fiber membranes. The results show that the wettability gradient can significantly affect water movement and wetting, and the electrospun fiber membranes exhibit sustained-release properties influenced by drug diffusion and backbone corrosion effects.

Electrospun freestanding hydrophobic fabric as a potential polymer semi-permeable membrane for islet encapsulation

Aakanksha Ruhela et al.

Summary: The study proposes a simple strategy to fabricate electrospun membranes that provide a favorable environment for proper islet function and desirable pore size to protect encapsulated islets from immune cells. The induced hydrophobicity and surface morphology of the membranes impede cell attachment and maintain the 3D circular morphology of islet cells. The pore size of 0.3-0.6 μm restricts immune cells but allows free movement of molecules like insulin and glucose, making the electrospun polymer fibrous membranes a strong candidate for successful islet encapsulation.

Iso- and Anisotropic Etching of Micro Nanofibrillated Cellulose Films by Sequential Oxygen and Nitrogen Gas Plasma Exposure for Tunable Wettability on Crystalline and Amorphous Regions

Katarina Dimic-Misic et al.

Summary: The cellulose films obtained from refined pulp with different enzymatic pretreatment digestion times were exposed to gas plasma, resulting in surface chemical and morphological changes affecting mechanical and surface properties. Single and dual exposure to oxygen and nitrogen plasma showed differing effects on the roughness, nanostructural and chemical changes, and wettability of the cellulose film. Oxygen plasma induced greater morphological change, while nitrogen plasma contributed more to chemical modification of the film surface.
