Ballistic impact analyses of foam-filled double-arrow auxetic structure

Jinlin Liu et al.

Summary: The foam-filled composite double-arrow auxetic structures were obtained by using the mold hot pressing method, bonding technology and stirring foaming process. Ballistic impact tests were conducted to analyze the effect of foam filling on the ballistic impact response of the structures. The results showed that the foam-filled structures had increased ballistic limit velocity and improved energy absorption compared to the unfilled structures.

Compressive response and energy absorption of all-composite sandwich panels with channel cores

Keyu Zhu et al.

Summary: A novel all-composite sandwich panel with channel core was proposed to enhance compressive strength and energy absorption characteristics. Experimental and numerical analysis results showed that the proposed structure exhibited better compressive strength and specific energy absorption compared to the traditional corrugated core sandwich panel. Further optimization of the structural efficiency through foam filling significantly increased the compressive strength and energy absorption.

Quasi-static crushing behavior of novel circular double arrowed auxetic honeycombs: Experimental test and numerical simulation

Feng Jiang et al.

Summary: In this study, the introduction of double circular arc walls in double arrowed honeycomb (DAH) improved its strength and energy absorption capability. Experimental and numerical results showed that the three types of circular double arrowed honeycomb (CDAH) had higher crushing stress, crush force efficiency (CFE) and specific energy absorption (SEA) compared to DAH. Furthermore, CDAH exhibited a higher negative Poisson's ratio (NPR) effect. This research provides insights for designing CDAH with desired properties by adjusting the geometric parameters.

In-plane compressive properties of assembled auxetic chiral honeycomb composed of slotted wave plate

Yi Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of wave radius, plate thickness, slot percentage, and base material on the mechanical performance of crosswise assembled auxetic chiral honeycombs. The results show that the assembled auxetic chiral honeycombs exhibit lower peak force and high plateau stress compared to the conventional assembled ones. Increasing the wave radius and plate thickness improves energy absorption and specific energy absorption. When the base materials of the vertical and horizontal wave plates are stainless steel and aluminum, respectively, the assembled auxetic chiral honeycombs demonstrate desirable energy absorption, specific energy absorption, and auxetic behavior.

Summary: This paper proposes a novel design of foam-filled crash boxes to enhance the energy absorption and protection capability. The study finds that partial filling design reduces material usage and increases specific energy absorption. An improved optimization strategy is proposed by considering material utilization and deformation stability. Experimental validation confirms the effectiveness of this method.

Compression and hysteresis responses of multilayer gradient composite lattice sandwich panels

Shuang Li et al.

Summary: In order to improve the combat effectiveness, stealth, and safety of marine structures, multilayer gradient composite lattice sandwich panels (MGCLSPs) were designed and fabricated. The incorporation of bionic gradients and material mixtures improved the damping and vibration isolation behaviors of the panels. Experimental and numerical studies showed that polyurethane foam-filled MGCLSPs exhibited better energy absorption characteristics, with positive gradient panels absorbing the most energy. The addition of polyurethane foam enhanced the strength and energy absorption characteristics of the panels.

On the structural parameters of honeycomb-core sandwich panels against low-velocity impact

Guangyong Sun et al.

Summary: This study investigated the low-velocity impact behavior of honeycomb-core sandwich panels through experimental and numerical analysis, identifying two distinct failure modes. Structural parameters such as facesheet thickness, core height, honeycomb cell size, and cell wall thickness were found to significantly influence the impact performance of the sandwich panels. Optimizing the structural design by controlling these parameters can enhance perforation resistance and energy absorption capacity.
