Niobium nanoparticle-enabled grain refinement of a crack-free high strength Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy manufactured by selective laser melting

Fei Xiao et al.

Summary: The primary Al3Nb with tetragonal D0(22) structure was found to be extremely effective in grain refinement for Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys during selective laser melting. Adding 1.5wt% Nb nanoparticles transformed columnar crystals into fine equiaxed crystals, eliminating defects such as cracks and porosity. Due to the high number density of primary Al3Nb and coherent interface with the Al matrix, the alloy exhibited excellent mechanical properties after T6 heat treatment.

Summary: Single-pass multi-layer and multi-pass multi-layer Al-Mg-Zn-Cu alloy components were fabricated using variable polarity TIG-based wire arc additive manufacturing. The study focused on the forming and molten pool flow of the components. A mathematical model was established to predict the geometric features of the deposited layers, and simulation calculations were performed to analyze the liquid metal flow behavior in the molten pool.

Regionalization of microstructure characteristics and mechanisms of slip transmission in oriented grains deposited by wire arc additive manufacturing

Feiyue Lyu et al.

Summary: The regionalization of microstructure regulation and mechanical property adjustment during the thermal cycle plays a vital role in the grain morphology and orientation of aluminum alloy components manufactured using wire arc additive manufacturing technology. However, the microscopic mechanism of the mechanical property difference caused by uneven microstructure in different regions remains unclear for the WAAM 2319 alloy.

A three-dimensional wire-feeding model for heat and metal transfer, fluid flow, and bead shape in wire plasma arc additive manufacturing

Xin Chen et al.

Summary: A three-dimensional wire-feeding model was developed to study the transient coupling behavior in wire plasma arc additive manufacturing. The model included a novel surface heat source model and an improved momentum source of the arc force. Simulation results agreed reasonably with experimental data, showing three different metal transfer modes as wire-feeding speed increased. The effects of arc shading and metal transfer on melt pool dynamics and bead shape were discussed.
