Variant selection, coarsening behavior of α phase and associated tensile properties in an α plus β titanium alloy

Lei Lei et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effect of cooling rates on variant selection, coarsening behavior of alpha phase, and microstructure evolution in alpha+ beta TC21 alloy. Different microstructure characteristics were observed under air cooling and furnace cooling conditions, leading to variations in tensile properties of the alloy.

Effect of αp/βtrans interfacial microstructure on tensile property and deformation behavior in Ti6242 alloys

Hang Luo et al.

Summary: A semi-equiaxed structure (S-ES) was obtained in a Ti6242 alloy by controlling the distribution of Mo between different phases. The S-ES was formed through a localized phase transformation and rapid cooling. The formation of a transition zone improved stress distribution at the interface and the presence of precipitation strengthened the matrix. This design approach is applicable to other dual-phase titanium alloys.

Tensile deformation behaviors of Ti-6.5Al-3.5Mo-1.5Zr-0.25Si alloy with different percentages of primary a phase

Z. Shao et al.

Summary: The mechanical properties and tensile deformation mechanism of a Ti-6.5Al-3.5Mo-1.5Zr-0.25Si alloy with varying percentages of primary alpha phase (alpha(p)) were investigated. It was found that the strength of the alloy increased with increasing percentage of alpha(p). The deformation mechanism in alpha(p) transitioned from single slip to multiple slip during tensile deformation. Microcracks were observed to initiate at the interface of two phases, propagate through the transformed beta phase (beta(t)), and eventually through alpha(p). A method for predicting the alloy's strength by considering the sizes of alpha(p) and beta(t) was proposed.

Creep deformation and strength evolution mechanisms of a Ti-6Al-4V alloy during stress relaxation at elevated temperatures from elastic to plastic loading

Ying Zhang et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the stress relaxation behavior and corresponding strength evolution mechanisms of Ti-6Al-4V alloy. Through microstructural observations, the evolution of dislocations and grain structures was identified. The study found that dislocations introduced by plastic loading promoted stress relaxation with a higher creep rate, and dislocations enhanced diffusion at high temperatures, resulting in similar stress relaxation phenomena. The study also found that high temperatures or loading to the plastic region caused significant strength loss.

Effects of heating rate on the alloy element partitioning and mechanical properties in equiaxed alpha-beta Ti-6Al-4V alloy

Jinhu Zhang et al.

Summary: The heating rate significantly influences the phase transformation, microstructure, and compositional distribution in Ti-6Al-4V alloy during solution treatment, with lower heating rates approaching equilibrium compositions. Increasing the heating rate can improve the mechanical properties of the alloy by adjusting the composition and volume fractions of different grains.

Summary: A novel strategy for developing alpha + beta dual-phase titanium alloys with low Young's modulus and high yield strength was proposed in this study, and an alloy was successfully developed through theoretical composition design and microstructure manipulation. The experimental results confirm that the developed alloy exhibits both low Young's modulus and high yield strength, indicating the potential for advanced biomedical titanium alloys with superior properties.
