Plastic in the inferno: Microplastic contamination in deep-sea cephalopods (Vampyroteuthis infernalis and Abralia veranyi) from the southwestern Atlantic

Guilherme V. B. Ferreira et al.

Summary: Microplastics are a common concern in marine ecosystems due to their widespread presence. However, little is known about their distribution patterns within the ocean basin and their interaction with biota, with most studies focused on surface waters. This study examined microplastic contamination in two deep-sea cephalopod species and found that a significant proportion of the evaluated specimens were contaminated. The vampire squid, with a feeding strategy that involves consuming fecal pellets, showed higher levels of contamination compared to the midwater squid. The size of the extracted microplastics was inversely proportional to the depth at which the organisms foraged. The composition of the microplastics varied greatly in terms of shape, color, and polymer type, highlighting the biological influence on the sinking mechanism of microplastics.

Breeding seabirds as vectors of microplastics from sea to land: Evidence from colonies in Arctic Canada

Madelaine P. T. Bourdages et al.

Summary: Seabirds have been identified as potential vectors for the transport of microplastics in the Arctic environment. However, their contribution to plastic pollution in the environment is relatively small compared to other sources. Seabirds deposit millions of anthropogenic particles into the environment annually at breeding colonies.

Summary: Most mesopelagic fishes sampled in the South Atlantic were contaminated with microplastics, while shallow water dwelling species did not ingest any. Overall, 66.7% of the studied fishes were found to contain microfibers, with viscose fibers associated with sanitary products being common.

Joana Fragao et al.

Summary: Microplastics were found to be present in the scat samples of Adelie, chinstrap, and gentoo penguins in the Antarctic Peninsula and Scotia Sea, with polyethylene and polyester being the main components. Other anthropogenic particles were also identified in high numbers. This study highlights the need for further research to understand the impact of microplastics and other anthropogenic particles on Antarctic ecosystems.

Microplastics in different tissues of a pelagic squid (Dosidicus gigas) in the northern Humboldt Current ecosystem

Summary: This study reveals the presence of microplastics in the gills, intestine, and stomach of jumbo squid, with sizes ranging from 80.75 to 4632.27 micrometers. The majority of microplastics are fibrous in shape, blue or black-gray in color, and composed of cellophane, possibly driven by the movement pattern and habitat use of the squid.
