Heavy metals levels in road dust from Muscat, Oman: relationship with traffic volumes, and ecological and health risk assessments

Hilal K. Al-Shidi et al.

Summary: The study found significant variations in heavy metal concentrations in road dust samples from Muscat, Oman. Mercury and arsenic showed increasing trends with traffic volume and were correlated to each other, suggesting vehicular emissions as their source. The ecological risk index for selected metals was considerable, but the hazard index was within the safe threshold. Overall, the study indicates minor health risks to the general public, with children being relatively more vulnerable to the impact of metals associated with dust.

Spatial Variability of Metals in Coastal Sediments of Elckie Lake (Poland)

Elzbieta Skorbilowicz et al.

Summary: This study determined the content and spatial distribution of various metals in sediment samples from the coastal zone of Elckie Lake in the Green Lungs of Poland. The concentration of metals was analyzed using atomic absorption spectrometry. The results indicated that the metals originated from natural sources such as the Earth's crust and wind-blown dust, as well as anthropogenic activities including transportation and coal burning. The study also found higher levels of heavy metals in sediments from urbanized areas compared to rural/forest and beach areas.

Characteristics, source apportionment and health risk assessment of heavy metals in urban road dust of the Pearl River Delta, South China

Chushan Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the characteristics of heavy metals in urban road dust from different cities and functional areas in the Pearl River Delta, South China. The results showed that the contamination levels of heavy metals were higher in industrial and commercial areas, with Foshan City having the highest contamination. Industrial activities, traffic activities, and building pollution were identified as the main sources of heavy metal contamination. While there were no significant carcinogenic and noncarcinogenic risks for adults, children showed significant noncarcinogenic effects from exposure to As and Cr, despite the low contamination levels of these metals. Ingestion was identified as the main pathway for heavy metal exposure through urban road dust.

Mostafa Redwan et al.

Summary: This study explored the concentrations and origins of seven heavy metals in the sediments of Manzala Lake, and found that the heavy metals and organic matter were enriched during the winter season. Some heavy metals posed a threat to the aquatic environment of Manzala Lake. The pollution of the sediments with heavy metals was mainly due to the discharge from different drains and the industrial region.

Source apportionment and health risk assessment for potentially toxic elements in size-fractionated road dust in Busan Metropolitan City, Korea

Hyeryeong Jeong et al.

Summary: The pollution level of potentially toxic elements in road dust in Busan Metropolitan City was investigated, and the health risks to humans were evaluated. The study found that the concentrations of these elements were higher in fine particles and most likely came from non-exhaust traffic-related sources. Certain metals posed higher health risks for both adults and children, especially at sampling sites with heavy traffic and industries. Continuous monitoring and management of these metals are necessary to protect human health and the urban environment.

Particle size distribution and total suspended solid concentrations in urban surface runoff

Hongtao Zhao et al.

Summary: An in-depth understanding of particle size distribution and total suspended solids (TSS) in surface runoff is crucial for managing urban diffuse pollution. Field experiments and model simulation were used to explore the dynamic behavior of TSS and influencing factors, showing that higher TSS concentrations in surface runoff contained coarser particles washed off from road-deposited sediments. Factors such as rainfall characteristics, urban-rural gradients, surface roughness, and climate differences affect the contribution rate of RDS to TSS by altering particle size composition.

Heavy Metal Contamination (Cu, Pb, Zn, Fe, and Mn) in Urban Dust and its Possible Ecological and Human Health Risk in Mexican Cities

Anahi Aguilera et al.

Summary: Cities, despite occupying a small percentage of the Earth's surface, have a significant impact on biodiversity and environmental conditions, ultimately affecting human health and well-being. A study of urban dust in six Mexican cities revealed widespread contamination, with Mexico City and Morelia being the most polluted. Lead contributed the highest ecological risk in all cities, posing a moderate risk in Mexico City, San Luis Potosi, and Toluca. Lead also presented a potential risk to children's health, while chronic exposure to iron and manganese could trigger various ailments. Therefore, it is important to identify the primary sources of lead in cities and implement mitigation strategies.

Summary: This study examines the long-term variations of heavy metals and total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) in sediments in the Bohai Sea and assesses their potential ecological risks. The results indicate that most of the evaluation factors meet the sediment quality standard, except for the concentration of metal Cd in some cases, which exceeds the standard and poses potential risks to the ecosystem.

Heavy metal pollution and potential ecological risk assessment for surficial sediments of Deepor Beel, India

Siddhant Dash et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate sediment pollution loadings and ecological risks, with three objectives. Through hierarchical clustering and principal component analysis, it was found that wetlands are most affected during the post-monsoon season, with most sites falling under moderate risk category. Cd was identified as the primary contributor to ecological risk. Chemical speciation analyses revealed different heavy metals' availability forms in sediment, highlighting the negative impact of Cr, Mn, and Mg on aquatic ecology.

Rainfall Washoff of Spores From Concrete and Asphalt Surfaces

Anne M. Mikelonis et al.

Summary: The study found that surface material type (such as concrete vs asphalt) and the kinetic energy of the storm event can impact the washoff of Bacillus anthracis spores in urban settings. There were no significant differences in washoff between two different spore types, but there were significant differences in washoff between asphalt and concrete surfaces. Additionally, different data-fitting approaches may be more appropriate for small washoff areas compared to large subcatchments.

Heavy Metals in Urban Street Dust: Health Risk Assessment (Lublin City, E Poland)

Wojciech Zglobicki et al.

Summary: Evaluating the levels of hazard index and cancer risk for heavy metals in street dust collected in a small/medium-sized city in Poland showed that despite some elements having concentrations 6-7 times higher than the geochemical background, overall health risks remain low. Cancer risk for adults was below 10^(-4), with lower values for Pb, while children had higher risk levels around 10^(-4) except for Pb. The health risk for all metals except Cr was higher in 2013 compared to 2018.
