Understanding the factors affecting the quantity and composition of street litter: Implication for management practices

Alessandra Rossi et al.

Summary: This study aims to understand the reasons behind the varying levels of litter in urban areas, which is crucial for addressing urban littering and improving marine water quality. The research surveyed litter on sidewalks in 35 selected sites in New Jersey, USA, and found that strategic placement of collection bins in areas with lower assessed property values, outdoor smoking areas, schools, and pedestrian-friendly areas is important. Possible management strategies include banning single-use plastic bags, limiting foam food containers, and increasing public education and outreach.

Bromine Content Differentiates between Construction and Packaging Foams as Sources of Plastic and Microplastic Pollution

Gloria H. Y. Gao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the contributions of construction and packaging to foam plastic litter which is found in the environment. Using visual characteristics and the presence of bromine as an identifying signature, the study reveals that the majority of building materials contain bromine, while only a small percentage of foam packaging does. The findings also highlight the significant presence of bromine in foam from construction activities in Toronto, emphasizing the need for better management of construction foam waste.

Composition and spatial distribution of floating plastic debris along the estuarine ecocline of a subtropical coastal lagoon in the Western Atlantic

Isabel B. Monteiro et al.

Summary: This study assessed the composition and spatial distribution of plastic fragments in the Estuarine Lagoon System in Laguna, Santa Catarina, Brazil. The findings showed that plastic filaments, mainly composed of polyester, polypropylene, and polyethylene, were the most abundant type of plastic. Fishing and urbanization were identified as the main sources of meso- and microplastic pollution in the environment.

Contribution of mulch film to microplastics in agricultural soil and surface water in China

Shu-Yan Ren et al.

Summary: This study quantified the contribution of agricultural mulch film (AMF) to microplastics in farmland soil and surface water in China. The results showed that AMFs contributed approximately 10% to 30% of the total microplastics in farmland soil. It was estimated that a significant amount of microplastics from agricultural soil were transferred to surface water and then to the ocean.

The abundance and characteristics of microplastics in rainwater pipelines in Wuhan, China

Wenjiao Sang et al.

Summary: The study shows that urban rainwater pipelines play a significant role in transporting microplastics into freshwater, with the highest abundance found in the business district and the lowest in the campus area. Microplastics were mainly in fragment form, with particles smaller than 1 mm dominating, diverse in color, and primarily composed of polymers such as polyethylene, polypropylene, and polyester.

To what extent are we really free from airborne microplastics?

Zhangyu Song et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of two common methods in removing airborne microplastics, with washing and ashing showing removal efficiencies of 88%-98% and 100% respectively. Airborne contamination during microplastic analytical procedures was identified, highlighting the need for further research to address this issue.

More than 1000 rivers account for 80% of global riverine plastic emissions into the ocean

Lourens J. J. Meijer et al.

Summary: Research shows that plastic waste in the marine environment mainly comes from rivers, with a model approach predicting the probability of plastic waste entering the ocean and identifying regions likely to emit plastic into the ocean. It is estimated that over 1000 rivers globally contribute to 80% of plastic waste emissions, with small urban rivers being the most polluting.
