Strain Development in Microalgal Biotechnology-Random Mutagenesis Techniques

Richard Bleisch et al.

Summary: Microalgal biomass and metabolites have great potential as a renewable source of nutrition, pharmaceuticals, and energy for improving the quality of human life. Their high volumetric productivity and minimal environmental impact make them an attractive raw material both ecologically and economically. Enhancing the productivity and robustness of microalgal cell factories is a crucial step towards economically viable bioprocesses, and this review provides an overview of the techniques used for random mutagenesis in these cell factories, focusing on physical and chemical mutagens, mutagenesis conditions, and mutant characteristics.

Optimization of the culture medium and characterization of antioxidant compounds of a marine isolated microalga as a promising source in aquaculture feed

Maliheh Safavi et al.

Summary: This research optimized the culture medium for a new marine isolate, Picochlorum sp., to improve its growth and evaluate its antioxidant activity, showing its potential as a promising feedstock for future studies in aquaculture feed or nutraceutical industries. Analysis of various fractions identified constituents with strong reducing power, contributing directly to the antioxidant effect of the microalgae.

Factors governing microalgae harvesting efficiency by flocculation using cationic polymers

Hang P. Vu et al.

Summary: This study found that the harvesting efficiency of Chlorella vulgaris by flocculation is influenced by the growth phase of the microalgae, with changes in microalgal cell properties playing a key role in this process. The presence of high levels of microalgal extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and negatively charged cells at the stationary phase contribute to effective flocculation via charge neutralisation and bridging.

Harvesting Aurantiochytrium sp. SW1 using organic flocculants and characteristics of the extracted oil

Nurdiana Mokhtar et al.

Summary: This study explored the use of different organic flocculants to harvest microalgae and extract docosahexaenoic acid-rich oil. It was found that cationic guar gum and gum arabic were optimal for cell harvesting, while okra gum led to higher phenolic compounds and bioactivities in the extracted oil. Overall, cationic guar gum produced the highest oil yield, while okra gum displayed enhanced phytochemical contents and bioactivities.

Two-level factorial analysis of the effect of fructose on DHA biosynthetic capacity of Aurantiochytrium sp. SW1

Vidyah Manikan et al.

Summary: Fructose has a significant positive effect on DHA content in Thraustochytrids, with a less profound impact on DHA biosynthetic capacity. When cultivated in fructose medium, Thraustochytrid species exhibit a slower growth rate but higher biomass and lipid accumulation compared to glucose medium after 48 hours.
