Influence of Pore Structure Particularity and Pore Water on the Occurrence of Deep Shale Gas: Wufeng-Longmaxi Formation, Luzhou Block, Sichuan Basin

Xueyuan Li et al.

Summary: The pore structure and pore water in deep shale gas reservoirs are unique and have a significant impact on gas occurrence. The development of pores by organic matter controls the connectivity of deep shale. Different burial depths and beds result in significant differences in pore structure, and mineral anti-compaction protection pores and reservoir fluid over-pressure are crucial for the development of organic pores. Primary formation water plays a vital role in the occurrence and enrichment of shale gas.

Combined effects of the chemical structure and nanopore development on water vapor/liquid adsorption in shale kerogen

Chu Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the interactions between water, chemical structure, and nanopore in shale gas reservoirs using experimental and simulation methods. The results show that water is preferentially adsorbed in micropores in the form of monolayer coverage at low relative humidity, while mesopores dominate the total water adsorption at high relative humidity. Simulation results reveal that water can exist in hydrophilic oxygen-containing structures in the form of monolayer coverage, and in hydrophobic carbon structures in the form of water clusters. The constructed molecular model helps to understand the microscopic mechanism of fluids-rock interactions.

A diffuse layer model for hydrocarbon mass transfer between pores and organic matter for supercritical CO2 injection and sequestration in shale

Shaojie Zhang et al.

Summary: CO2 injection in shale oil reservoirs is a feasible method for geological sequestration and enhanced oil recovery. This study investigated the mechanisms of mass transfer between inorganic pores, organic matter, and kerogen matrix, proposing a novel PKDL model. Mathematical models derived for hydrocarbon mass transfer in different rock shapes matched experimental data closely, revealing delayed hydrocarbon recovery in shales compared to tight rocks. This research advances diffusion and extraction theories in shale rocks, contributing to the injection and sequestration of CO2 in shale formations.

Gas Adsorption Characterization of Pore Structure of Organic-rich Shale: Insights into Contribution of Organic Matter to Shale Pore Network

Yang Wang et al.

Summary: The study shows that organic matter and organic matter-hosted pores play significant roles in the pore network of Wufeng-Longmaxi shale. The pore structure heterogeneity of the bulk shale is stronger than that of isolated organic matter, and pores associated with minerals enhance the heterogeneity to some extent. Organic matter and its hosted pores contribute significantly to the entire pore network of Wufeng-Longmaxi shale.

Effect of water occurrence on shale seepage ability

Ying Mu et al.

Summary: This study utilizes nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technology and fluid state experiments to analyze the distribution of water in clay minerals and shale and its impact on permeability. The results show that water saturation is the main factor affecting shale seepage capacity, with the existence of bound water film being a significant factor under low water saturation.
