Alkali Metal Carboxylates: Simple and Versatile Initiators for RingOpening Alternating Copolymerization of Cyclic Anhydrides/Epoxides

Chong-Min Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, the ring-opening alternating copolymerization of cyclic anhydride and epoxide was thoroughly investigated using alkali metal carboxylates as initiators. The coordination effects of epoxide on the alkali metal carboxylate were verified using FT-IR spectroscopy and DFT calculations. Alkali metal carboxylates were found to effectively catalyze the copolymerization of cyclic anhydride and epoxide, leading to the synthesis of polyesters with alternating structures. The use of potassium acetate was particularly noteworthy as it allowed for the copolymerization of different cyclic anhydrides and epoxides, including the high molar feed ratio synthesis of poly(PA-alt-PO) with a molecular weight exceeding 100 kDa.

Record Productivity and Unprecedented Molecular Weight for Ring-Opening Copolymerization of Epoxides and Cyclic Anhydrides Enabled by Organoboron Catalysts

Rui Xie et al.

Summary: A metal-free, highly active, and high thermoresistance system for the ring-opening copolymerization (ROCOP) of epoxides with cyclic anhydrides to prepare polyesters has been developed. The catalysts can endure high reaction temperatures without side reactions, leading to high molecular weight polyesters with low polydispersity. This system achieved an unprecedented efficiency and turnover number, supported by kinetic studies, crystal structure analysis, B-11 NMR spectra, and DFT calculations.

Constructing ABA- and ABCBA-Type Multiblock Copolyesters with Structural Diversity by Organocatalytic Self-Switchable Copolymerization

Chen Li et al.

Summary: The self-switchable pathway for the copolymerization of epoxides, cyclic anhydrides, and cyclic esters has been shown to be effective in producing well-defined copolymers with structural diversity and functionality. Through optimization of the organocatalyst and kinetic studies, a sequence-defined triblock copolymer was successfully synthesized, demonstrating excellent chemoselectivity in terpolymerization. The newly established pathway showed broad monomer adaptability and allowed for the one-step synthesis of complex pentablock copolyesters.

Chemically recyclable thermoplastics from reversible-deactivation polymerization of cyclic acetals

Brooks A. Abel et al.

Summary: The study introduces a reversible-deactivation CROP method using a commercial initiator and catalyst to synthesize poly(1,3-dioxolane) with comparable tensile strength to some commodity polyolefins. Depolymerization of PDXL using strong acid catalysts efficiently returns monomer, even from a waste mixture of commodity plastics. This efficient polymerization method offers a tough thermoplastic material that can undergo selective depolymerization to monomer.
