Water-assisted mechanical testing of polymeric thin-films

Song Zhang et al.

Summary: Research on thin-film mechanics is hindered by the inherent fragility of thin films and the lack of experimental instruments. By comparing different testing methods, the impact of different substrates and confinement effects on thin-film mechanics can be evaluated. Study of thin-film mechanics will contribute to understanding the structure-property relationships in the field of organic semiconductors.

Resolving the Molecular Origin of Mechanical Relaxations in Donor-Acceptor Polymer Semiconductors

Nrup Balar et al.

Summary: This study investigates the thermomechanical behavior of a series of polymers based on benzodithiophene using dynamic mechanical analysis, revealing three prominent relaxation transitions. Side chains play a crucial role in determining T-gamma, with mixing different side chain chemistries resulting in splitting of the gamma-relaxation. Through processing, it is shown that the alpha-relaxation is due to aggregate formation.

Decoupling Role of Film Thickness and Interfacial Effect on Polymer Thin Film Dynamics

Quanyin Xu et al.

Summary: Thin film dynamics can be influenced by both thickness and interfacial effects, affecting parameters such as glass transition temperature (T-g) and expansivity (beta). However, the ability to modulate beta differs significantly between thickness and interface perturbations, leading to variations in thin film properties even when T-g remains constant.

Achieving High Thermoelectric Performance and Metallic Transport in Solvent-Sheared PEDOT:PSS

Allison C. Hinckley et al.

Summary: Polymer-based materials have great potential for thermoelectric applications, though limited by poor electrical properties. By utilizing solution-shearing deposition and directionally applied solvent treatments, high power factors exceeding 800 mu W m(-1) K-2 can be achieved in PEDOT:PSS thin films. Structural alignment of PEDOT chains and larger-sized domains play a crucial role in enhancing electrical conductivity. Further improvements to power factor are expected through device geometry and postdeposition solvent shearing optimization.

Molecular Origin of Strain-Induced Chain Alignment in PDPP-Based Semiconducting Polymeric Thin Films

Song Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the molecular orientation of DPP-based D-A polymer thin films under tensile deformation through experimental measurements and molecular modeling. The results show highly aligned polymer crystallites upon deformation, with limited backbone alignment within the crystalline domain. The effect of side-chain length on DPP chain alignment is observed to be less noticeable. The study highlights crystallite rotation and chain slippage as the primary deformation mechanisms for semiconducting polymers.

Regioregularity-Dependent Crystalline Structures and Thermal Transitions in Poly(3-dodecylthiophene)s

Hyeonjung Park et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigates the temperature-dependent liquid crystalline phases of RR-controlled P3DDTs, showing that decreasing the RR leads to decreased phase transition temperatures and the adoption of different crystal structures. The findings explain the effects of RR on the crystalline structures and thermotropic liquid crystalline behavior of P3DDTs, enabling precise control over their self-assembly and optoelectrical properties.
