Effect of Graft Length and Matrix Molecular Weight on String Assembly of Aligned Nanoplates in a Lamellar Diblock Copolymer

Christian Tabedzki et al.

Summary: In this study, the behavior of polyethylene glycol grafted nanoplates in a polymer matrix was explored using hybrid particle/self-consistent field theory simulations. It was found that the graft length of the nanoplates and the molecular weight of the matrix have an impact on the potential of mean force. Experimental results confirmed the correlation observed in the simulations and provide guidance for the development of tailored nanocomposites.

Interphase in Polymer Nanocomposites

Jin Huang et al.

Summary: Lightweight and high-strength functional nanocomposites play a crucial role in practical applications. The excellent mechanical properties of natural biomaterials provide inspiration for improving composite materials. However, previous studies have often overlooked the importance of the interphase in nanocomposite systems. This Perspective focuses on the construction and control of the interphase in a confined space and its relationship with the macroscopic properties of the materials.

Self-Assembled Colloidal Nanopatterns toward Unnatural Optical Meta-Materials

Ke Wang et al.

Summary: 2D nanoscale patterns are widely studied for various applications, with gold nanoparticles demonstrating unnaturally high refractive index as optical meta-materials. Recent advances in colloidal chemistry allow for the fabrication of non-periodic colloidal nanostructures, potentially useful for optical meta-surfaces. The article provides a brief overview of optical meta-materials, reviews progress in high-index and negative-index meta-materials, and discusses experimental progress in high-precision self-assembly for meta-surface fabrication.

Block copolymer thin films

Changhang Huang et al.

Summary: Block copolymers (BCPs) are a special type of polymeric system with chemically distinct homopolymer blocks tethered together, used in bulk and thin film forms for nanotechnology applications. Progress in tailoring mesoscopic and nanoscopic structures of BCP thin films using external fields relies on precise control of structural orientation, local alignment, and long-range ordering, with conventional polymer field theory and numerical solution schemes playing a key role. Experimental and theoretical insights into the next generation of strategies for obtaining desired BCP thin film patterns and their industrial applications are also provided.

Epitaxial Assembly of Nanoparticles in a Diblock Copolymer Matrix: Precise Organization of Individual Nanoparticles into Regular Arrays

Jiabin Gu et al.

Summary: The precise organization of nanoparticles into well-defined arrays is a challenge in the development of high-performance metamaterials. By combining the self-consistent field theory for diblock copolymers and molecular dynamics for nanoparticles, it was found that response layers of asymmetric diblock copolymers induce the epitaxial assembly of nanoparticles during hot zone annealing. Control over the assembly pathway of nanoparticles leads to the formation of defect-free arrays within a diblock copolymer matrix, enhancing the mechanical properties of nanocomposites.
