Covalent Organic Framework Nanobowls as Activatable Nanosensitizers for Tumor-Specific and Ferroptosis-Augmented Sonodynamic Therapy

Shanshan Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, COF nanobowls were synthesized and utilized as activatable nanosensitizers with tumor-specific sonodynamic activity. The high crystallinity of the COF nanobowls enables efficient loading of the sonosensitizer and the in situ growth of manganese oxide inhibits non-specific damage to normal tissues. When reacting with tumor-overexpressed glutathione, the gatekeeper manganese oxide is decomposed to restore the ROS generation capability, leading to increased intracellular ROS stress and enhanced sonodynamic efficacy.

Defective engineering and heteroatom doping construction in carbon nanobowls for achieving high-rate potassium-ion storage with long cyclic life

Jinbao Wang et al.

Summary: Carbon-based materials have become a popular research topic for potassium ion anode materials due to their unparalleled advantages of being environmentally friendly and low-cost. Recent studies have shown that N, O-doping can improve ion transfer and provide abundant active sites. Density functional theory calculations confirm that N, O-doping and vacancy defects increase the adsorbability of potassium ions. Additionally, vacancy defects and heteroatom doping induce the spontaneous migration of potassium ions. Inspired by these findings, nanobowl-like carbon structures with abundant vacancy defects and N, O heteroatoms are designed, resulting in high-capacity and long-life N, O-doped carbon nanobowls.

An axis-asymmetric self-driven micromotor that can perform precession multiplying on-the-flymass transfer

Kang Xiong et al.

Summary: In this study, axis-asymmetric hollow bowl-shaped Janus micromotors are developed, which can perform unusual precession motion and significantly enhance liquid medium convection in a large area. By modulating the fuel concentration and depression degree, these micromotors achieve synchronistic self-rotation and translation, resulting in improved solute mixing and diffusion efficiencies compared to conventional Janus counterparts. This work demonstrates a novel motion mode, precession, of self-driven micro/nanomotors that greatly enhances micro-convection and rapid diffusion of liquid medium.

Transformation of Amorphous Nanobowls to Crystalline Ellipsoids Induced by Trans-Cis Isomerization of Azobenzene

Hui Sun et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates a method to transform amorphous nanobowls into crystalline ellipsoids through UV-induced trans-cis isomerization. The approach utilizes an azobenzene-containing amphiphilic homopolymer as a building block and introduces hydrogen bonding and pi-pi interactions to promote the formation of nanobowls. Upon UV irradiation, the nanobowls disassemble and reassemble into crystalline ellipsoids. It is found that a high incubation temperature is critical for the isomerization and rearrangement of polymer chains.

Mesoporous Polydopamine Nanobowls Toward Combined Chemo- and Photothermal Cancer Therapy

Shahinur Acter et al.

Summary: This study explores a new approach for targeted cancer treatment by combining chemo- and photothermal therapy using bio-derived polydopamine (PDA) mesoporous nanobowls, which possess exceptional biocompatibility. The results demonstrate that loading the anticancer drug doxorubicin (DOX) into the nanobowls and treating with near-infrared (NIR) illumination significantly enhances pharmaceutical cytotoxicity to cancer cells compared to free DOX. Additionally, combining the DOX loaded nanobowls with photothermal treatment results in nearly 100% cell death. This research highlights the potential of PDA mesoporous nanobowls as a scaffold for combined chemo- and photothermal therapy, offering new opportunities for treating advanced cancer.

Computational Study on the Regulatory Mechanism of Cell Membrane Wrapping on Liposomes by Embedded Bowl-like Nanostructures for Drug Delivery

Runshan Kang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the control of cell uptake of nanoparticles (NP) by designing soft liposomes with embedded rigid bowl-like nanostructures. The results reveal two pathways of cell membrane wrapping on nanobowl-supported liposomes, which are determined by liposome deformation, invagination, and nanobowl orientation. The study also suggests that moderate decreases in nanobowl size and adhesive strength can enhance cell uptake by facilitating nanobowl rotation. These findings have the potential to improve drug delivery using nanoparticles.
