Benzo[d]thiazole Based Wide Bandgap Donor Polymers Enable 19.54% Efficiency Organic Solar Cells Along with Desirable Batch-to-Batch Reproducibility and General Applicability

Summary: A series of new wide bandgap (WBG) polymers were developed by introducing S, F, and Cl atoms to the alkylthienyl sidechains on BDT, resulting in lowered energy levels and enhanced aggregation properties. Among them, PBTz-F exhibited a low-lying HOMO level and stronger face-on packing order, leading to a high-power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 18.57% in the PF-BTz:L8-BO blend. It also showed good batch-to-batch reproducibility and general applicability. Furthermore, ternary blend OSCs based on the PBTz-F:L8-BO blend achieved a further enhanced PCE of 19.54%, one of the highest values in OSCs.

A2-A1-DA1D-A1-A2-Type Non-Fullerene Acceptors for Poly(3-hexylthiophene)-Based Organic Photovoltaic Application

Summary: Due to its low cost, stability, and simple synthesis, the homopolymer poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) shows great potential in large-area fabrication of organic photovoltaics (OPV). Designing non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) for P3HT has been a hot research topic, but the power conversion efficiency (PCE) required for commercialization has not been achieved yet. In this study, a DAD ladder-type fused core is introduced into A(2)-A(1)-D-A(1)-A(2)-type NFAs, and two different end-capped A(2)-A(1)-DA(1)D-A(1)-A(2)-type NFAs (BTA91 and BTA93) are synthesized. By fine-tuning the structure, an improved PCE is achieved.

Effect of Isomerization of Linking Units on the Photovoltaic Performance of PSMA-Type Polymer Acceptors in All-Polymer Solar Cells

Summary: Isomerization of functional groups in photovoltaic materials is an effective strategy to tune the molecular packing and photovoltaic performance of all-polymer solar cells. The study synthesized two narrow-band gap polymer acceptors through copolymerization of a small-molecule acceptor and thiophene-thiazolothiazole with isomerized ethylhexyl substitution. The results showed that the isomerization of polymer acceptors resulted in a red-shifted absorption spectra and higher lying LUMO energy level, affecting the photovoltaic performance of the all-polymer solar cells.
