Animal board invited review: Specialising and intensifying cattle production for better efficiency and less global warming: contrasting results for milk and meat co-production at different scales

P. Faverdin et al.

Summary: Cattle, as the largest consumers of plant biomass, generate high methane emissions during their digestion, which contributes to global warming. The specialisation of cattle towards either milk or meat production has led to increased milk production in dairy cows and carcass weight in slaughtered cattle. Improving animal performance at the individual and farm levels can decrease feed use and greenhouse gas emissions per unit of milk or carcass weight. However, an increase in milk production per dairy cow reduces meat production in the dairy sector, necessitating more beef cows to maintain the same meat production at the country level. Meat produced from dairy cows has a better feed efficiency and emits less methane compared to meat produced by cow-calf systems. The relationship between milk and meat efficiencies varies depending on the productivity levels of both dairy and beef cattle. Improving productivity in developing countries can increase milk and meat efficiencies, reduce land use, and decrease methane emissions. In other regions, increasing meat production from young animals produced by dairy cows may be a more viable option to reduce feed use while maintaining the milk-to-meat production ratio.

Nitrous oxide emissions from cow urine patches in an intensively managed grassland: Influence of nitrogen loading under contrasting soil moisture

Bhupinder Pal Singh et al.

Summary: In dairy grazing systems, N2O emissions and emission factors from urine patches were quantified and compared under different urine application methods and soil moistures. The study found that N2O emissions were influenced by urine volume and soil moisture levels, with different emission factors observed in different urine application areas. This research highlights the complexity of N2O emissions from livestock urine patches and calls for further investigation to determine more accurate emission factors.

Enhancing the Sustainability of Temperate Pasture Systems through More Diverse Swards

David M. Jaramillo et al.

Summary: Temperate grasslands can be highly productive with the inclusion of multispecies swards that reduce reliance on nitrogen fertilizers. Despite challenges such as weed management and species persistence, well-managed multispecies swards have the potential to enhance productivity and environmental sustainability in grazing systems.

The effect of concentrate supplement type on milk production, nutrient intake, and total-tract nutrient digestion in mid-lactation, spring-calving dairy cows grazing perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) pasture

M. Dineen et al.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the effect of concentrate supplement type on milk production, nutrient intake, and total-tract nutrient digestion in lactating dairy cows. The results showed that increasing metabolizable protein supply can lead to higher milk yield for cows consuming pasture-based diets.
