The detection of bacterial exometabolites in marine dissolved organic matter through ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry

Sarah K. Bercovici et al.

Summary: This study investigates the contribution of bacterial exometabolites to marine dissolved organic matter (DOM) using untargeted Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS). The results show that there is limited overlap between bacterial exometabolites and marine DOM under standard instrument settings, but increasing the instrument settings improves the detection of low concentrations of bacterial exometabolites. Therefore, higher sensitivity settings and windowing a characteristic region of the molecular fingerprint are recommended.

Online Coupling of Liquid Chromatography with Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry at 21 T Provides Fast and Unique Insight into Crude Oil Composition

Steven M. Rowland et al.

Summary: High magnetic field Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR) mass spectrometry coupled with online liquid chromatography provides a powerful tool for detailed characterization of complex chemical mixtures with high mass resolving power and accuracy. The method allows for analysis of large ion populations with high dynamic range and enables assignment of molecular formulas with high precision. The approach discussed in this study presents a comprehensive strategy for elemental composition analysis and structural characterization of complex mixtures.

Online Counter Gradient LC-FT-ICR-MS Enables Detection of Highly Polar Natural Organic Matter Fractions

Limei Han et al.

Summary: The study investigated natural organic matter (NOM) using ESIFT-ICR combined with LC, and applied a counter gradient technique to stabilize solvent conditions. The results showed that the counter gradient method increased TIC intensity and the number of assigned molecular formulas, and revealed more molecular formulas in the CHNO, CHOS, CHNOS formula classes.
