Phytoplankton exudates and lysates support distinct microbial consortia with specialized metabolic and ecophysiological traits

Brandon Kieft et al.

Summary: This study found that different heterotrophic populations selectively assimilate exudates from common marine phytoplankton, with unique metabolic adaptations. The carbon assimilation rates calculated from SIP data provide a deeper mechanistic understanding of consumer succession and carbon use during marine bloom events.

A unified theory for organic matter accumulation

Emily J. Zakem et al.

Summary: Organic matter plays a crucial role in global elemental cycles, with various hypotheses proposed to explain its accumulation. However, our understanding of the dynamics and accumulation of organic matter remains incomplete. A new theoretical framework has been developed to explain the predictable accumulation of organic matter in natural environments through biochemical, ecological, and environmental factors.

Contrasting patterns of carbon cycling and dissolved organic matter processing in two phytoplankton-bacteria communities

Samu Elovaara et al.

Summary: Microbial consumption of phytoplankton-derived organic carbon in the pelagic food web is an important component of the global C cycle. Our study reveals that large dinoflagellates cycle relatively more C between phytoplankton biomass and the inorganic C pool, whereas small cryptophytes direct relatively more C to the microbial loop.
