Unidirectional transmission of visible region topological edge states in hexagonal boron nitride valley photonic crystals

Min Wu et al.

Summary: We theoretically designed valley photonic crystals (VPCs) based on two-dimensional hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) materials and demonstrated their ability to support topologically protected edge states in the visible region. These edge states enable spin-dependent unidirectional transmission with high transmittance and contrast. We also investigated the effect of refractive index on transmittance and bandwidth, and found that increased refractive index leads to improved performance. This study opens up new possibilities for designing unidirectional transmission devices in the visible region and has broad applications.

Coexisting valley and pseudo-spin topological edge states in photonic topological insulators made of distorted Kekule lattices

Guochao Wei et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the existence of topological valley and pseudo-spin edge states in a carefully designed two-dimensional Kekule photonic crystal with time reversal symmetry. The presence of these edge states was confirmed through theoretical, numerical, and experimental analysis, and their distinct characteristics were identified through transmission measurements and end-scattering analysis.

Ultracompact topological photonic switch based on valley-vortex-enhanced high-efficiency phase shift

Hongwei Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, the phase-shifting theory of topological edge modes based on valley photonic crystals (VPCs) is investigated, leading to the demonstration of an ultracompact thermo-optic topological switch (TOTS) with high-efficiency phase-shifting properties and sharp-turn features. The research findings are significant for the development of topological functional devices in the fields of optical communications, nanophotonics, and quantum information processing.

Design of broadband all-dielectric valley photonic crystals at telecommunication wavelength

YuHui Han et al.

Summary: Topological photonic crystals, specifically valley photonic crystals (VPCs), show promising potential in integrated photonic chip applications due to their ability to suppress backscattering from defects and achieve high forward transmittance. VPCs based on quantum valley Hall effect can achieve spin-dependent unidirectional transmission with conventional dielectric materials, such as silicon, and have recently attracted broad attention. The working bandwidth of VPCs at telecommunication wavelengths may be expanded using innovative design approaches.

Topological Valley Photonics: Physics and Device Applications

Haoran Xue et al.

Summary: Topological photonics, with the introduction of valleys as an important degree of freedom, has shown promising progress in designing and constructing photonic topological phases. The unique valley-contrasting physics allows for robust light propagation and efficient out-coupling of topological states, without the need for magnetic materials or complex construction of photonic pseudospin. This technology can be integrated on compact photonic platforms for future applications.

Evolution of topological edge modes from honeycomb photonic crystals to triangular-lattice photonic crystals

Jin-Kyu Yang et al.

Summary: Edge modes in photonic valley Hall effect can exist even when Berry curvature vanishes, as demonstrated in triangular-lattice photonic crystal slab structures. These edge modes with zero Berry curvature have extremely low bending loss and can propagate in wide photonic band gaps.
