Charge Relays via Dual Carbon-Actions on Nanostructured BiVO4 for High Performance Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting

Yuxiang Wang et al.

Summary: Carbon doping and introduction of carbon quantum dots can improve the electronic conductivity and light absorption capability of BiVO4, thus enhancing the separation and transfer of photo-generated charges. Electroplating a polyaniline layer onto the catalyst can sustain a stable photocurrent density for a long time.

Amorphous type FeOOH modified defective BiVO4 photoanodes for photoelectrochemical water oxidation

Xinyu Lu et al.

Summary: A new method was designed to induce oxygen vacancies in BiVO4/FeOOH nanostructures, leading to improved performance in photoelectrochemical water oxidation. The strategy involved integrating Bi2S3 quantum dots into BiVO4/FeOOH to create defect-rich high-performance photoanode Vo-BiVO4/FeOOH.

Catalytic deoxygenation of carboxyl compounds in the hydrothermal liquefaction crude bio-oil via in-situ hydrogen supply by CuO-CeO2/γ-Al2O3 catalyst

Hongbiao Du et al.

Summary: Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) has the potential to produce bio-oil from biomass waste, but further deoxygenation is needed due to the high oxygen content. This study investigated the catalytic deoxygenation performance of stearic acids in HTL bio-crude and found that (CuO)(10)-CeO2/gamma-Al2O3 exhibited the best performance. The proposed catalytic deoxygenation pathways involved carbon monoxide generation, in-situ hydrogen generation, short-chain fatty acid generation, and n-alkanes generation. DFT calculation showed that CuO-CeO2 reduced the activation energy, making it an effective method for upgrading HTL bio-crude.

A copper(II) coordination compound under water-oxidation reaction at neutral conditions: decomposition on the counter electrode

Younes Mousazade et al.

Summary: In the context of energy storage, the oxygen-evolution reaction (OER) through water-oxidation is an uphill reaction. Copper(II) coordination compounds have been widely used for OER, but understanding the mechanism in the presence of these compounds remains a challenge. This study investigates the electrochemical OER activity of a copper(II) coordination compound at pH 7 and focuses on the decomposition process.

Mechanistic Understanding of Water Oxidation in the Presence of a Copper Complex by In Situ Electrochemical Liquid Transmission Electron Microscopy

Summary: The research investigates the role of nanosized Cu oxide particles, ions, or clusters in the electrochemical OER with a mononuclear copper(II) complex with TMC. It is found that Cu oxide-based nanoparticles, rather than a molecular structure, serve as the true OER catalysts. This approach provides a roadmap for informed molecular catalyst design in the field of sustainable catalysis.

Unextractable fossil fuels in a 1.5 °C world

Dan Welsby et al.

Summary: Parties to the 2015 Paris Agreement have pledged to limit global warming to below 2 degrees Celsius, but a sharp decline in fossil fuel use is required to keep the temperature increase below 1.5 degrees Celsius. A global energy systems model shows that by 2050, 60% of oil and fossil methane gas, and 90% of coal must remain unextracted to stay within a 1.5 degrees Celsius carbon budget.

Enhanced BiVO4 Photoanode Photoelectrochemical Performance via Borate Treatment and a NiFeOx Cocatalyst

Jingnan Zhang et al.

Summary: The combination of boron-treated BiVO4 with NiFeOx electrocatalyst (NiFeOx/B/BiVO4) demonstrates excellent performance as a photoanode under solar illumination, achieving high current density at lower voltages without the need for sacrificial agents. This is largely attributed to the presence of [B(OH)4](-) ligands and NiFeOx electrocatalysts, which enhance the separation efficiency of photoelectron-hole pairs. This work provides a promising approach for developing efficient photocatalysts for solar water splitting.
