Interfacial Adsorption and Corrosion Inhibition Behavior of Environmentally Friendly Imidazole Derivatives for Copper in the Marine Environment

Li Tan et al.

Summary: The corrosion resistance of copper was studied using weight loss and electrochemical tests with 2-imidazolidinone and allantoin as inhibitors. Both inhibitors exhibited cathodic corrosion inhibition and protective effects, with inhibition efficiencies over 97%. Surface properties were studied qualitatively and quantitatively, revealing effective physical adsorption films formed by the inhibitors. This study deepened the understanding of the corrosion inhibition ability and interfacial adsorption behavior of 2-imidazolidinone and allantoin, providing guidelines for the development of novel corrosion inhibitors for copper.

Cryo-TEM and rheological study on shear-thickening wormlike micelles of zwitterionic/anionic (AHSB/SDS) surfactants

Shuo Lu et al.

Summary: Experiments revealed the formation of hybrid wormlike micelles with significant viscosity under the joint action of zwitterionic surfactants and sodium dodecyl sulfate, primarily due to the electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions between the two molecules. Additionally, the longitudinal growth of wormlike micelles also contributed to viscosity enhancement, while shear-induced alignment of wormlike micelles was identified as the major cause of shear-thickening.

The effect of alkyl chain length of the imidazole ionic liquid surfactants on the improving lubricating properties of the hexagonal lyotropic liquid crystal composed of the [C16imCn]Br/hydrotalcite/H2O

Meiling Lei et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of hydrotalcite concentration and alkyl chain length of [C(16)imC(n)]Br on the properties and lubricant performance of [C(16)imC(n)]Br/hydrotalcite hexagonal LLCs. The incorporation of hydrotalcite into hexagonal LLCs increases interlayer distances and viscoelasticity gradually. However, the friction coefficient and wear volume decrease initially and then increase with the increase of hydrotalcite content. Longer alkyl chain length of [C(16)imC(n)]Br leads to increased viscoelasticity, interlayer distance, and water permeability, which reduces the friction coefficient and wear volume at moderate hydrotalcite content. The improvement in lubrication performance is attributed to the formation of a tribofilm through physical adsorption and tribochemical reaction of [C(16)imC(n)]Br/hydrotalcite LLCs on the steel surface.

Molecular Dynamics Studies on Effective Surface-Active Additives: Toward Hard Water-Resistant Chemical Flooding for Enhanced Oil Recovery

Yiling Nan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the molecular arrangement and possible applications of surfactant blending in hard water-resistant chemical flooding for oil recovery using molecular dynamics simulation. The results show that cationic surfactants can disaggregate cation bridging, while non-ionic surfactants barely disaggregate it. Furthermore, increasing the concentration of propanol and cationic surfactants can further decrease the oil-brine interfacial tension.

Design and Self-Assembly of Sugar-Based Amphiphiles: Spherical to Cylindrical Micelles

Pablo G. Argudo et al.

Summary: Sugar-based amphiphiles are a natural alternative to synthetic ones with biodegradable properties. An investigation of their structure-assembly relationship was conducted using various techniques in aqueous media. The results showed that the average degree of polymerization (DP) and the addition of a hydroxyl group to the hydrophobic tail affected their self-assembly. The critical micelle concentration was more influenced by changes in the hydrophobic molecular region than by variations in (DP) over bar. Amphiphiles with high (DP) over bar formed spherical micelles regardless of the presence of a hydroxyl group, while those with low (DP) over bar and only one hydrophilic moiety formed cylindrical micelles, and the addition of a hydroxyl group to the tail resulted in a spherical shape.

Modeling Micellar Growth and Branching in Mixtures of Zwitterionic with Ionic Surfactants

Alexey I. Victorov et al.

Summary: In this study, the classical molecular thermodynamic aggregation model is extended to describe the aggregation behavior in aqueous mixtures containing zwitterionic and ionic surfactants. Analytical expressions are derived to describe the contribution of dipoles to the electrostatic term of the standard free energy of aggregation into micellar branches and the dipolar contribution to the persistence length of wormlike micelles. The model takes into account the dependence of micellar branching on surfactant concentration by including the population of micellar branches in the material balance equations. The model is applied to predict the aggregation equilibrium in aqueous salt solutions of betaine mixed with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and longer tail sodium n-alkyl sulfates, and the predictions are compared with experimental data.

Molecular Basis for the Morphological Transitions of Surfactant Wormlike Micelles Triggered by Encapsulated Nonpolar Molecules

Gervasio Zaldivar et al.

Summary: In this study, the morphological transitions of surfactant wormlike micelles upon the addition of nonpolar molecules were investigated using a molecular theory. The model successfully predicted the transition from wormlike to spherical micelles and proposed simple molecular mechanisms to explain this transition. The effects of concentration, molecular structure, and degree of hydrophobicity of the nonpolar additive on the transition were in good agreement with experimental trends in the literature.

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Diffusometry of Linear and Branched Wormlike Micelles

Samuel W. Holder et al.

Summary: NMR diffusometry is capable of differentiating various types of micellar microstructures and identifying the mechanisms of surfactant self-diffusion in micellar solutions. The self-diffusion coefficient of surfactant molecules in linear and branched micelles are slower than proton diffusion in the bulk, indicating different diffusion mechanisms. Surfactant self-diffusion can occur through curvilinear diffusion in linear and moderately branched micelles, and through micellar breakage, exchange between micelles and/or the bulk in branched micelles.
