Light-Triggered High-Affinity Binding of Tetramethylammonium over Potassium Ions by [18]crown-6 in a Tetrahedral Anion Cage

Yue Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, an azobenzene-functionalized bis-bis(urea) ligand and phosphate anion were assembled to form the first photoactive anion structures, tetrahedron (A(4)L(6)) and helicate (A(2)L(3)), which underwent interconversion through cis-trans isomerization. The tetrahedral cage could accommodate [18]crown-6 molecule and capture TMA(+) ions with high affinity, even replacing K+ in [K([18]crown-6)](+) to form a nested structure.

Beyond Platonic: How to Build Metal-Organic Polyhedra Capable of Binding Low-Symmetry, Information-Rich Molecular Cargoes

Charlie T. McTernan et al.

Summary: The field of metallosupramolecular chemistry has made rapid progress in recent years, focusing on the formation of hollow self-assembled metalorganic structures and their applications in confining nanospaces. However, most of the structures studied so far exhibit high symmetry, which limits their ability to interact with asymmetrical biomolecules and synthetic compounds. Therefore, the design of lower-symmetry metal-organic structures is necessary to bind, sense, separate, and transform such substrates.

Transformation of Porous Organic Cages and Covalent Organic Frameworks with Efficient Iodine Vapor Capture Performance

Chao Liu et al.

Summary: The reaction of BPDDP with cyclohexanediamine results in the synthesis of nitrogen-rich porous organic cage BPPOC and two USTB-1 and USTB-2 COFs. The newly prepared COFs show enhanced iodine vapor adsorption capability and can be transformed between different structures by exchanging the imine unit. This transformation is influenced by the crystal structures and the porosity of the materials, with nitrogen atoms proving superior to sulfur atoms for POCs in iodine vapor capture.

Self-assembly of nanostructures with high complexity based on metal•••unsaturated-bond coordination

Yuya Domoto et al.

Summary: The coordinative self-assembly of simple building blocks towards complex nanostructures is currently a popular research area in the development of artificial nanomaterials comparable to biological systems. Traditional coordination donors have been widely used in previous studies, but the recent emergence of weak pi-coordination between metal ions and unsaturated carbon-carbon bonds offers a flexible and highly tolerant bonding approach for complex nanoarchitectures. The combination of metal-acetylene pi-coordination with conventional coordination has allowed for the formation of large polyhedral complexes with unprecedented molecular entanglement, highlighting the potential advantages of this concept.
