Accurate Simulations of Lipid Monolayers Require a Water Model with Correct Surface Tension

Carmelo Tempra et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the importance of using high-quality water models in molecular dynamics simulations of lipid monolayers. By combining a lipid force field that includes long-range van der Waals forces with water models that reproduce experimental surface tensions, the researchers were able to reproduce experimental results and uncover different phase behaviors of the monolayers. Although some improvements were achieved with certain water models, the best agreement with experiments was obtained using a standard lipid model and water model.

Dimerization of the pulmonary surfactant protein C in a membrane environment

Hanna Korolainen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the details of SP-C dimerization using molecular dynamics simulations. The results revealed that SP-C dimerizes in pulmonary surfactant membranes and forms dimers with different topologies. These findings provide a stronger basis for understanding how SP-C functions together with other surfactant proteins.

Pulmonary surfactant and drug delivery: Vehiculization, release and targeting of surfactant/tacrolimus formulations

Alberto Hidalgo et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated the potential of using pulmonary surfactant (PS) for drug delivery over the respiratory air-liquid interface in both in vitro and in vivo settings. The combination of PS with the hydrophobic anti-inflammatory drug Tacrolimus showed enhanced efficiency in drug delivery, particularly in attenuating the pro-inflammatory effects of LPS-induced acute lung injury. These results suggest a synergistic anti-inflammatory effect of PS/drug formulations, opening up novel effective delivery strategies for inhaled drugs.
