A molecular study on the behavior of polyethoxylated alkyl ethers surfactants in a water/n-alkane interface

Arthur M. Luz et al.

Summary: This article discusses the challenges of advanced oil recovery in oil/water and water/oil emulsions, highlighting the role of surfactants in modifying interfacial properties. It specifically focuses on the use of non-ionic surfactants in water/n-heptane interfacial systems and how their structure affects stabilization interactions.

Ionic Surfactants at Air/Water and Oil/Water Interfaces: A Comparison Based on Molecular Dynamics Simulations

Paulina Mueller et al.

Summary: Through atomistic molecular dynamics simulations, it was found that ionic surfactants create higher interfacial pressures at oil/water interfaces compared to air/water interfaces. The influence of oil on the surfactants' in-plane distribution was identified as a major factor contributing to this effect, although not the sole reason.

Intersurfactant H-bonds between head groups of n-dodecyl-β-D-maltoside at the air-water interface

Matej Kanduc et al.

Summary: The study found that sugar surfactants can form intersurfactant H-bonds and H-bonds with water molecules in closely-packed monolayers, with the number of intersurfactant H-bonds decreasing and the number of surfactant-water H-bonds increasing as the distance between head groups increases. Even at very large distances below the cmc, intersurfactant H-bonds are still present, likely due to the formation of clusters at the surface. GIX scattering revealed that a homogeneous surfactant monolayer is formed at full coverage around the cmc, indicating cluster formation only occurs below the cmc.

In situ determination of the structure and composition of Langmuir monolayers at the air/water interface by neutron and X-ray reflectivity and ellipsometry

Armando Maestro et al.

Summary: This review paper focuses on the structure and composition of Langmuir monolayers (LMs) at the air/water interface using various experimental techniques. From the first experiment by Angels Pockels in her home kitchen to the present day, LMs of different materials have been extensively studied and are important model systems in biology, physics, and chemistry.

A Multistate Adsorption Model for the Adsorption of C14EO4 and C14EO8 at the Solution/Air Interface

Valentin B. Fainerman et al.

Summary: The reorientation model is capable of better describing the properties of adsorption layers of CnEOm. Experimental data for C14EO4 and C14EO8 showed that assuming 5 adsorption states for C14EO4 and 10 adsorption states for C14EO8 provided optimal agreement with the data.

Thermodynamics, Kinetics and Dilational Visco-Elasticity of Adsorbed CnEOm Layers at the Aqueous Solution/Air Interface

Valentin B. Fainerman et al.

Summary: The adsorption behavior of linear poly(oxyethylene) alkyl ether at the water/air interface is best described by a reorientation model, and the adsorption rate decreases at higher surface coverage due to molecules transitioning from a state with larger molar surface area to a state with smaller molar surface area.
