Status and Trajectories of Soft-Bottom Benthic Communities of the South Florida Seascape Revealed by 25 Years of Seagrass and Water Quality Monitoring

Summary: Although seagrass ecosystems globally decline due to human impacts, the Florida Keys has maintained stable benthic communities over the past 25 years. However, loss of the climax seagrass Thalassia testudinum has been observed in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, with no or partial recovery. Nutrient-enriched nearshore sites show a shift towards Halodule wrightii meadows, while major hurricanes have caused almost complete loss of seagrass meadows at offshore sites. This study highlights the importance of long-term monitoring programs in understanding benthic community trajectories and informing future seagrass conservation efforts.

Geomorphic gradients in shallow seagrass carbon stocks

Summary: Seagrass meadows are important sinks of organic carbon, especially near-surface C(org) pool. This study investigated the spatial variability in seagrass near-surface C(org) and biomass C(org) across different geomorphic and community typologies. The results showed that near-surface C(org) stock in vegetated areas was higher than in unvegetated areas. Lagoonal and reef-associated meadows had higher C(org) stocks than estuary meadows, and persistent seagrass communities had higher C(org) stocks than pioneer communities.
