Summary: Determining appropriate scales of effect is important for finding relationships between environmental covariates and species abundance. This study used remote sensing data to investigate the influence of seasonal environmental conditions and survey conditions on ringnecked pheasant rooster abundance. Grassland proportion and small grain crop cover had significant effects on pheasant abundance at different scales, while spring gross primary productivity and percentage of herbaceous wetlands were important covariates in wet years. The methodology of this study can be applied to model count data for other species.

Urban expansion inferenced by ecosystem production on the Qinghai-Tibet plateau

Informing Nature-based Climate Solutions for the United States with the best-available science

Summary: Nature-based Climate Solutions (NbCS) are managed alterations to ecosystems designed to increase carbon sequestration or reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The benefits and unintended consequences of NbCS are not well understood due to a critical mismatch between the scale of data used and the scale at which NbCS projects are implemented. This paper proposes a research agenda to bridge these gaps, using pre-existing tools and data to create robust NbCS assessments and considering biophysical impacts and equitable implementation strategies.

Land-based climate solutions for the United States

This study highlights the benefits of combining nature-based solutions and cellulosic bioenergy for addressing mitigation goals. Nature-based solutions are limited by carbon accrual duration, while bioenergy solutions carry environmental risks. The study shows that a combined approach has a greater mitigation capacity compared to prioritizing nature-based or bioenergy solutions separately.

Optimal ranges of social-environmental drivers and their impacts on vegetation dynamics in Kazakhstan

Summary: Kazakhstan's grassland systems, part of the largest contiguous grassland system in the world, have been understudied despite their historical importance for agricultural and pastoral practices. In this study, we examined the individual and interactive effects of various social-environmental system (SES) drivers on vegetation dynamics in Kazakhstan. We found that snow depth and spring drought played major roles in explaining the variance in vegetation greenness, and the freeze-thaw process also had a significant impact across the country. Moisture and topographic factors had a greater influence on vegetation growth compared to socioeconomic factors, but the interaction between socioeconomic and environmental drivers amplified their impacts. Our findings provide insights into the causes of grassland degradation and can inform ecological protection efforts in semiarid regions.

Albedo-Induced Global Warming Impact at Multiple Temporal Scales within an Upper Midwest USA Watershed

This study examines the changes in landscape albedo-induced global warming impact (GWI) over a 19-year period in five ecoregions within a watershed in the upper Midwest USA. The results show that land cover changes, such as deforestation, agriculture development, and urban expansion, have unique influences on shortwave radiative forcing and contribute differently to the total GWI.

Global maps of cropland extent and change show accelerated cropland expansion in the twenty-first century

Summary: High-resolution satellite observations are essential for monitoring global progress towards Sustainable Development Goals. The study shows that global cropland area increased by 9% in the first two decades of the twenty-first century, while per-capita cropland area decreased by 10%. This was primarily due to agricultural expansion in Africa and South America, leading to conflicts with the goal of protecting terrestrial ecosystems. Despite a decrease in per-capita cropland area, per-capita annual cropland net primary production increased by 3.5% due to intensified agricultural land use.

Quantifying influences of natural and anthropogenic factors on vegetation changes using structural equation modeling: A case study in Jiangsu Province, China

Summary: The study utilized a structural equation modeling approach to quantify the impacts of natural environment, climate change, and human activities on vegetation coverage change in Jiangsu province, China from 2000 to 2015. The results revealed the significant influences of climate change and human activities on vegetation coverage change, with different driving mechanisms in northern and southern Jiangsu. Night light and road impact were identified as the best indicators of human activity change. This study provides a framework to better understand the complex interrelationships behind the spatial temporal change of vegetation coverage.

Thematic accuracy assessment of the NLCD 2016 land cover for the conterminous United States
