New directions in research on women and gender in extractive industries

Summary: Since 2000, there has been significant academic attention on the challenges concerning women and gender in the extractive industries, driven by an unprecedented commodity boom. Gender issues have now become a key focus area in mining research, with a substantial volume of research turning it into a distinct field. This paper reviews the emerging directions in literature on women and gender in both large-scale and small-scale mining, and discusses potential areas of future research and theoretical frameworks.

Prevalence of Self-Reported Prescription Opioid Use and Illicit Drug Use Among US Adults NHANES 2005-2016

'Walking the talk': Exploring heterogeneity in gender diversity performance in mining

Summary: Gender diversity has become an important criterion for investors, but the mining sector has struggled with this due to its traditional emphasis on masculine identity. A qualitative study of 24 major mining companies in eight regions reveals that stronger gender diversity performance is linked to a higher degree of coherence between diversity aspirations and initiatives. Lack of coherence reflects a superficial approach to diversity management that hinders progress.

Occupational Factors Affecting Women Workers' Sexual and Reproductive Health Outcomes in Oil, Gas, and Mining Industry: A Scoping Review

Summary: This scoping review focuses on the sexual and reproductive health (SRH) outcomes of female workers in the oil, gas, and mining industry. Despite limited evidence, chemical and physical factors were found to significantly influence women's SRH outcomes. The most common SRH issues were menstrual and cycle disorders, as well as risky pregnancies. Menstrual disorders were notably associated with psychological and organizational factors.

Surface mining and low birth weight in central appalachia

Diversity and inclusion in mining: An analysis of indicators used in sustainability reporting

Increasing D&I reporting in the mining industry remains a promising means of promoting global industry equity and aligning with the 2015 UN Sustainable Development Goals.
