An open-source platform for 3D-printed redox flow battery test cells

Hugh O'Connor et al.

Summary: This article presents an open-source, low-cost, customisable 3D-printed test cell for the development of new large-scale stationary energy storage technologies. Through simulation-led design optimization, the fluid manifold geometry of the cell has been improved, resulting in enhanced real-world performance. The polymers used in the cell have been tested for compatibility and optimal parameters for 3D printing have been determined using advanced X-ray micro-CT. This framework provides a simple process for researchers to produce robust cells at an extremely low cost, contributing to the democratization of research and increasing accessibility to flow electrochemistry.

Atomic Layer Deposition on Polymer Thin Films: On the Role of Precursor Infiltration and Reactivity

Robin R. Petit et al.

Summary: Inorganic barriers grown by ALD can solve stability issues caused by foreign species permeating into polymer thin films. The infiltration of ALD species into polymers can also modify their properties. Results show that the deposition temperature and the location of functional groups in the polymer chain have the strongest influence on the infiltration behavior.

Measuring the Glass Transition Temperature of Vapor-Phase-Infiltrated AlOx-PS-r-PHEMA Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Thin-Film Materials

James T. Bamford et al.

Summary: This study explores the impact of vapor-phase infiltration (VPI) on the glass transition temperature of materials, showing a significant increase in Tg with higher metal oxide loading. VPI is a useful method for modifying the thermophysical and thermochemical properties of polymer materials, applicable to various forms such as thin films, coatings, membranes, foams, fibers, and fabrics.
