Hybrid magnetron sputtering of ceramic superlattices for application in a next generation of combustion engines

Bruno Cesar Noronha Marques de Castilho et al.

Summary: A hybrid magnetron sputtering process was developed to manufacture nanostructured CrN/Cr1-xAlxN multilayers, which showed improved performance compared to commercial PVD coatings of CrN. Multilayer periodicities in the range of 5 to 10 nm yielded the best tribological performance.

Wetting and corrosion properties of CuxOy films deposited by magnetron sputtering for maritime applications

Jose D. Castro et al.

Summary: Copper-based materials can be safe and economic alternatives for producing anti-biofouling coatings. This study shows that oxygen incorporation into copper films can change their growth profile, and CuxOy coatings exhibit poor corrosion resistance and high ion release in seawater.

Electrochemical and Optical Behavior of ZrN-Ag Coatings Deposited by Means of DC Reactive Magnetron Sputtering Technique

Claudia P. Mejia et al.

Summary: The formation of nanostructured transition metal nitride coatings by introducing a small amount of silver has been proven to enhance the physical properties of these materials. This investigation studied the influence of silver on the chemical composition, morphology, and microstructure of ZrN coatings, as well as their functional properties including corrosion resistance and optical reflectance. The results showed that the incorporation of silver improved the corrosion resistance and increased the optical reflectance of the coatings, making them potentially useful as optical protective coatings.

Corrosion resistance of Cu-Zr(O) N films in a simulated seawater environment

Jose D. Castro et al.

Summary: The study indicates that a novel zirconium (oxy)nitride coating doped with copper has potential for antibacterial, anticorrosion, and antibiofouling properties, but the addition of copper results in decreased corrosion resistance against seawater.

Synergetic effect of thickness and oxygen addition on the electrochemical behaviour of tantalum oxide coatings deposited by HiPIMS in DOMS mode

C. F. Almeida Alves et al.

Summary: The HiPIMS technique in DOMS mode was used to deposit tantalum (Ta) and Ta1-xOx films. After depositing pure metallic Ta and Ta1-xOx films with two different thicknesses, their structure, morphology and chemical composition were investigated. The study showed that increasing film thickness affects the mechanical and electrochemical properties of metallic coatings, while tantalum oxide films enhance the polarization resistance of non-reactive coatings.

Mechanical Properties of Protective Coatings against Marine Fouling: A Review

Alessandro Pistone et al.

Summary: The accumulation of marine organisms on ship hulls poses a global problem for maritime industries, with the use of biocide-containing paints threatening marine ecosystems. The focus is shifting towards non-biocidal solutions in protective coatings, particularly in developing hydrophobic coatings based on siloxane and epoxy resin for anti-fouling applications, with an emphasis on environmentally friendly and cost-effective solutions.

Cu oxidation mechanism on Cu-Zr(O)N coatings: Role on functional properties

Jose D. Castro et al.

Summary: Zirconium oxynitride (Zr(O)N) and Copper-Zirconium oxynitrides (Cu-Zr(O)N) were deposited on stainless steel substrates using DC reactive magnetron sputtering, with different oxygen contents achieved through a duty cycle controller. Chemical activation of the samples resulted in the antibacterial effect of CuZrON-DC100, where Cu reacted with O2- ions forming CuO. The multifunctionality of Cu-Zr (O)N coatings, combining aesthetic surface and antibacterial properties, was demonstrated.

REACH regulation challenge: Development of alternative coatings to hexavalent chromium for minting applications

E. Carneiro et al.

Summary: The REACH regulation enforced by the European Union has accelerated the search for alternative solutions to hexavalent chromium electrodeposition processes. Electroplated chromium coatings are widely used in applications requiring good mechanical and tribological properties. The study introduces Cr(Al,Si)N coatings as an alternative to hard chromium, showing outstanding mechanical properties and high resistance to wear.
